At a young age, Hale's mother, fearing a prophecy promising strife to someone in her line, did everything she could think of to prepare Hale should it come true with her. This included binding a great otherworldly spirit deep within her to watch over her.

It didn't take effect and the spirit was eventually expelled anyway, but it did leave an imprint that Hale learned to mold into this state; augmenting her strength, shielding her mind, and growing quasi-sapient, nearly indestructible tentacles.
