My guess is that they aren't quite as fragile looking insect-like wings as you might imagine, but they certainly can't make swimming terribly easy, unless they have enough range of motion to flatten down against her back.

What hivedogs could do with are something like beetle-like coverings on their backs to fold their wings away under, and they would only have half their current issues with clothing that way!
