Chapter 24: The Sister
Alethea was worried sick.
Literally as it turned out judging from the vomit she had cleaned up off her muzzle, again.
She saw the devastation live on the news, building torn down, cops everywhere, and no contact from
her sister. At first the news report had seemed mostly normal, until Alethea had realized what building
the reporter was in front of, and the kind of stupid college-student-hours that Atasi worked. Heck if it
wasn’t for her own late hours she would have missed the report entirely till the next day. A part of her
wondered if that would have been for the best.
Since the coverage had started, Alethea’s heart had been pumping liquid nitrogen as hard as the current
coming out of the hoover dam. She had paced her room so much that her feet were started to throb
and the carpet might be developing tears. She had called so many times that that she felt like she might
rub the screen away where the ‘call’ button appeared, of course every call went to voicemail. It got
even worse when they even stopped ringing and just went straight to voicemail, that could only mean
that Atasi’s phone had turned off. Was it just off? was it dead? was she?...
Alethea tried for force herself to drink some water to settle her stomach. She had nothing else to
upchuck at this point other than bile, but she still felt like vomiting anyway. She didn’t know it was
possible to be this worried.
Of course she had called her parents, and her aunts and uncles, and her friends, and the cops, and
everyone else she could think of, but no one knew anything. She knew that she should try to sleep, but
no matter how bloodshot her eyes got there was no way she was doing anything other than sit on the
couch with her bucket and stare at the news.
Her vigil paid off when she caught a glimpse of Atasi. She was ALIVE! and flying… and… Alethea shook
her head and blinked. She couldn’t have actually just seen THAT could she? Her sister FLYING out of the
ruined building, while gripping her skirt to avoid flashing the news crew? No that had to have been
some sleep deprivation and panic induced hallucination, but she HAD seen her.
Alethea almost body slammed her door down running out of her dorm as fast as she could. Down the
stairs she went, then out the doors and sprinting across the campus towards her sister’s dorms, rabidly
pressing call on all her contacts she went. She both thanked god that she and her sis were at the same
university so she was so very close, and cursed that fact that they had gotten dorms on literal opposite
sides of the campus. Sprinting over a mile in the wee hours on no sleep, a totally empty stomach and
little to no water had her doubling over with cramps and gasping for air repeatedly, but even if it took
hours she was getting there. If her sister had gotten out then it was the dorms or the hospital, and the
dorms were the one that Aletha could check, at least before the busses started running.
Atasi slowly woke up to loud knocking at her door. She and the ‘watcher’ had both crashed pretty hard
after eating, understandable given that they were both totally exhausted after what they had been
though. That said waking up at 5 AM was less then pleasant even if one was well rested, so to be woken
this early was more than a little irritating.
Staggering up she tottered out of her bedroom and towards the door. She normally slept naked, or in
panties at most, but with a guest this even she had decided to use her bath robe as a regular robe as she
padded towards to door. The watcher was still snoozing on her futon couch. In the dim morning light,
mostly provided by streetlights outside, Atasi could see the blanket resting on a hollow space on the
couch. It told her roughly where the watcher was, she was sprawled out on the futon with the blanket
apparently barely pulled up to her waist. Atasi could only tell where the woman’s upper body was
based on the indent she made in the mattress, and for now at least she hadn’t woken up.
As she passed her desk on the way to the door she noticed a long section of dust that seemed to be
hovering. It took a moment for her sleep deprived brain to put together that that was where the
watcher’s sword was resting. Once again she found herself wondering how the invisibility was even
possible, but was pulled back out of it by the knocking.
“Do you have ANY idea what time it is” She demanded at the unknown annoyance as she unlocked an
opened the door, “Alethea?!
The person behind the door, knocking hard on it at 5AM in the morning was indeed Atasi’s younger
sister. The poor thing looked even more disheveled than Atasi felt, and Atasi found herself wondering
what had happened, was Alethea injured or something that would result in her present appearance.
“Atasi!” Alethea blurted out as she burst into the room ramming herself into Atasi’s chest and having
both fall to the floor. “ATASI ATASI ATASI ATASI!!”
“Oh woah” Atasi grunted as the pair ended up on the floor with her sister on top of her, “Ohh sis. what
are you doing here?”
Alethea sat up and started down at her sister, “Are you insane? There was some sort of terrorist attack
at your JOB. I couldn’t contact you and the cops didn’t know anything!! I was worried fucking SICK!”
Alethea flopped back down and locked Atasi in a death grip bear hug.
“nnnn uh” Atasi gasped and took a deep breath, “ahh. well I’m ok, just a little dinged up” Atasi squirmed
in the steel trap that was her sister’s hug, but managed to kick the door closed, She wasn’t sure what
anyone would think if they say her lying on the floor with another girl, but she still felt privacy was a
good idea. It felt like it was 15 minutes before Alethea let go, it probably wasn’t that long, but escaping
the death grip was a bit of a relief. Atasi tried to reassure her sister by forcing a smile up at her, “You
going to let me up at any point sis?”
Alethea honestly looked like she was considering NOT getting off her sister, but eventually got up and
offered her hand, “Why didn’t you call? I thought you might have been dead”
“I …” Atasi took her sisters hand, stood up and readjusted her robe. She was a bit ashamed to admit
that calling family honestly hadn’t occurred to her, sure she was more than a little overwhelmed at the
time, and had lost her phone at some point during the mess, but given how bad her sister looked she
was clearly suffering too in not knowing. Atasi made a mental note to make it up to her sister somehow,
whether by getting her a shiny new laptop, or treating her to every dessert in the cheesecake factory,
she wasn’t sure but she’d figure something out later. “I’m sorry, I lost my phone and was… well I was a
little freaked out to be honest. Still am.”
Alethea suddenly snapped into a new mood, “Oh you are. Uh right. anything you need sis? Some food,
someone to do your laundry for you? A massage? Whatever you want I’m here for you.”
Atasi raised her eyebrow at the ‘massage’ suggestion, “Its ok, I had food, and… since when do you do
massages?”
“Oh I took a class” Alethea said as if that was a perfectly normal elective, the girl did have a tendency to
always be multitalented in the weirdest ways. “Want me to show you?”
“Uh.. lets save that for later”
“You sure? I could probably really help you relax? just get on the bed and I can…”
“Alethea” Atasi grabbed her sister’s shoulders, “I’m sure you can but its 5AM, I am utterly exhausted
from, uh, from what happened.” She figured that explaining about fighting cyber zombies and going to
‘hell’ would be to long a conversation to have right now so she decided to leave it for later, “Right now, I
just need to go back to sleep. Just make sure mom knows I’m alive, and let’s figure things out over
lunch, ok?”
Alethea fidgeted, but nodded, she still clearly wanted to do SOMETHING, but she knew that she would
just have to wait, “Oh fine, yes. I. OH I know. I’ll just crash on your couch till you are rested.”
If Atasi had been less groggy maybe her usually powerful brain would have made the next connection a
bit faster than it did. As things stood though, by the time she realized what was about to happen there
was barely enough time left to open her mouth before her hyper energetic little sis was over to the
folded-out futon, and half in the air as she jumped onto it. Atasi could only watch as the scene seemed
to run in slow motion as the girl fell the short distance and face planted, not onto a soft mattress, but
face first into a pair of invisible breasts, on a now VERY awake watcher.
