I love the wide variety of folks that you meet in a bar.
Seems that everyone stops by eventually.
I've met doctors, mechanics, lawyers, baseball players, students,
CEOs and professional hobos.
People love to have a drink with a talking dog.
Sometimes we have a brief chat.
Other times I feel like a psychiatrist, as the troubled and tipsy
pour out their worries and ask for advice.
I'm always glad to listen. I have no more insight on the world than
anyone else. I sometimes think humans feel better if they verbalize
their demons, laying out a to-do list of problems to be solved.
I nod and sip my beer.
Who better to confide in than your dog?
One such person was Marilee. She motioned me over and patted the
barstool next to her. I swept my tail aside with a flourish and took a
seat. She didn't ask the usual questions, instead taking it for granted
that anthropomorphic canines were frequent customers at Sharkeez.
"I've got a problem," she began. "I'm sure you can help."
I expected her to ask me to chase the neighbor's cat,
or act as her guard dog and escort her to her car.
Turns out it was neither. She is a college professor at UCLA, specializing
in the dynamics of sustainable recycling. Her doctoral thesis outlined
the hurdles faced by public and private enterprise in encouraging
folks to recycle. She said the general public knows very little about the
science of re-use and how each person's contribution makes a huge
impact on the planet.
Dr. Marilee wanted my ideas on novel ways to alert the public
of the importance of recycling. She wanted these ideas now.
While I was drinking beer. In a fursuit. In a crowded bar...
I assured her that I would make every effort to educate on her behalf.
So here we go...some fun recycling facts:
*Recycling one aluminum can saves enough evergy to power a TV
for three months.
*350,000 aluminum cans are made every minute.
*To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees are cut down.
*If all newspaper was recycled, we would save 250,000,000 trees a year.
*Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic bottles every hour.
*The energy saved from recycling one platic bottle can run a 100 watt
bulb for two hours.
Her list goes on and on. Her tips on how to recycle were easy and
commonsense. For more info visit:

I know I can count on my furry pals to spread the word.
I promised the professor I'd help.
Thanks for passing these tips along.
Business over, she thanked me and seemed relieved. I gave her a
squeeze and told her I'd make sure the bar recycled my Corona bottle.
As I turned to leave, a young man came running over.
"Hey dog," he said. "My girlfriend is really mad at me.
Think you could talk to her?"
I nodded and followed him over to his scouling companion.
I gave her the happy paws and she smiled.
Hmmm, that was easy.

I kinda wish that some military bases made recycling important. Where I'm stationed at, they just burn cardboard and toss all the bottles and other stuff. A lot of people on the base too want this to be important, but it just seems that the base COs keep saying "No".

You know it's amazing who you can meet while sitting at a bar.
I was in Nacogdoches Texas of all places sitting at a bar in the Hotel me and my best friend's family were staying at..
Anyway,
I get into this conversation with a guy who has traveled more then I have over a couple beers.
As I'm talking with him I find out he is one of those oceanographers who has traveled almost everywhere.
Well another pint bottle in I find out he's been to Chicago and many other places because of his job.
To make a long story short as we are talking this girl walks in with her friends to order Jaeger Bombs..
She's wearing a queen's crown and I come to find out she had just turned 21 and was obviously on one of those pass out and welcome to true adulthood (Been there but didn't pass out :p)
Anyway,
They order two quick Jaeger Bombs and I'm saying to myself this woman is going to be wheeled out of here because Jaeger Bombs are like long island iced tea.
So I get to talking with her over some Pike Street Kilt lifter and I say welcome to the adult world as me and the guy Iwas talking to are watching this almost laughing to ourselves.
To make a long story short the girl and her friends walked out of the hotel bar and who knows how the night ended..
So then I go back to talking to this really interesting oceanographer guy and a drunk patron walks up to me and mumbles something I can't understand but then the bar keep tells me he's a regular, go figure.
Anyway,
Around midnight I have to get back to my room for a few hours of sleep but i was too damn excited to sleep because my best friend was graduating from SFA.
So I bid the oceanographer ado and went up to my room because the place was going to close at midnight anyway.
That's my bar room tail and in case you are wondering Nacogdoches is in a dry county per se where you can't get beer from a store but can drink it in a bar when you sign an agreement slip.
It's really quite interesting to see dry counties are really not that dry if you know where to look. Angelia County where Nacogdoches is is dry but it does have bars in town..
Just FYI to anybody going to SFA whose watching you..

I live in a state where you pay a deposit on cans and bottles and they will refund it if you turn them in for recycling. This dog is doing her part!
As usual, such interesting stories! I've gotten that a few times, tipsy people are my favorite when I'm in suit, because they are usually the least likely to hassle you, and they're so funny.

                    Hi Rodg,
No doubt what you are doing is a "ministry" by being a presence to those at the bar. As you mentioned, you have all kinds of folks attending for all kinds of reasons. Many years ago, a friend of mine was leading a Bible study at her church. At the end of the program, the group was challenged to visit the local bars, and simply listen and being a presence. The folks that participated spoke nothing but positives about what happened from the experience. Granted, the group stood out, since they would not normally visit a bar, but they were grateful that it was a valuable experience. We all have our nitch! Keep up the good work fellow canine! **extends paws**
Cheers,

I'd probably be the same way in suit, sitting and listening to so many people and doing my best to help out. I have noticed that most my friends in real life around my town have found me and turns out they have these big problems or have bipolar disorder or other like illnesses. My one friend I have known since the 1st grade has such problems and is on medication all the time. I have remained one of her go to gals when it comes to her problems fitting into everyday life and hanging out. I just love helping people and cheering them up. One thing is for sure though, I'd have to get my canine suit that I want made done. Cause going to bars as a blue heron or a dragon might not have the effect I want, but who knows till you try. :) Thanks for another great read and I'll be sure to pass the recycling tips along, I always go to this one site that allows you to click this link to help save the rain forest, children, and animals. Here's the link: http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/.....ankyou_sitenav Clicking on the other tabs let you give other things for that tab. :)

Consider this koala's eyes opened. I always say I plan to recycle, but then I get lazy... I know, no excuse. One way to pass it along is to get very young children started...My cousin's 3 started when they were toddlers; it was fun to be able to "recycoe" to the point they were almost taking the cans from us before they were empty! To this day, they still recycle as a habit and they are in school now.
Thank you for you wonderful stories... I find them very inspiring. I was anxious to get my suit so I could have more fun at cons, but now I find myself thinking about all the other places I can wear it and maybe brighten someone's day.

Your stories are always an interesting read. But one minor point, is the fact about recycling aluminum cans is a misquote, as the classic quote is that recycling a can saves about enough power to run a TV for 3 hours, not 3 months. That quote itself might be getting slightly dated as the amount of aluminum used in beverage cans has been decreasing over time, aluminum smelting is getting better, etc., although it is still in the ballpark of hours.

Daww, i reckon the easyness to confess all woes to a 6ft talking bi-ped dog stems from confiding in teddy bears/stuffed animals from childhood... And your aura of awesomeness induces a feeling of carefreeness and laughyness thats almost as intoxicating as alcohol products...

I think people talk to you because they don't feel any pressure. I mean, when you are talking to a human you have to take in the fact that they might judge you or have their own problems, a random talking dog is a surreal escape from that and I think it makes people feel more open since they probably don't feel as exposed.
Keep being amazing and having amazing experiences and may god be with you :)
Keep being amazing and having amazing experiences and may god be with you :)
Many people are indecisive when it comes to making the important decisions in life and they want someone to tell them what they already know. That's why some people call or write Dan rather than Asking Amy or Dear Abby or Ann Landers. He's a very sex-positive individual, and he's a bit snarky too. Not afraid to tell someone when they're being stupid.

I'd encourage you to become a bartender, except that'd be tricky while wearing your paws. I say this because you seem to have just the right personality to be one of those bartenders that everyone knows and loves because they listen, sometimes help, and can always keep a secret.
But I'm sure you're happy just being the dog everyone knows and loves.
But I'm sure you're happy just being the dog everyone knows and loves.
When I lived in Florida growing up, every house on my street was kinda required to recycyle, because the county provided you with a Yellow and Blue bin. Yellow was for newspapers and such, and blue was for glass, plastic, and aluminum can's & bottles. Florida is a very populated place, and the county I lived in, Palm Beach County, was I think the largest in the state. The Solid Waste Authority of South Florida was big into recycling, and I think it helped a ton.
Now that I'm in Ohio, they really don't have a centralize recycling program or anything that I'm aware of, at least on a city scale.
Good to hear you've become the spokes-dog for Recycling!

It's good that you're trying to spread a little awareness on recycling. Sadly where I work at a stadium where so much waste gets thrown in the garbage. I will also go many places where I will find aluminum cans in the garbage or garbage in the racycling, and wasting aluminum is really not a good thing to do (I can imagine all the subway trains and light rail vehicles that could be made from aluminum cans tossed in the garbage). Here in Toronto things are getting better though, styrofoam containers can now be recycled and my apartment building just got organics recycling, so now I find my garbage getting lighter and lighter. There is also a stronger push being made to properly dispose and recycle discarded electronics as well as hazardous waste. There is also another advanced kind of recycling technology that takes garbage, processes it through this chemical mix at a high temperature and turns the resulting product into pellets that can be used to fuel power plants (instead of say coal). Something like that might be worth using to clear out existing and decommissioned garbage dumps.

I always thought recycling paper and plastics did more harm than good. Taking a lot of energy to operate the machinery to process the items not to mention the pollution that emits from the plastics as they're melted down again and the papers need to be shredded and re-shredded into a pulp before it can be pressed and processed. It's like the Toyota Prius. "Sure, the exhaust doesn't pollute as much as say... the Camaro. But take into consideration the chemicals used to make them and the pollution of processeing it all as well as disposing of it all and re-processing it in the event of the car becoming totalled you can drive my Camaro the rest of your life and do less damage. Forget mining for the materials."
But she probably knows what she's talking about. She's had to do a lot of research.

                    Hey dog,
I'm about to start school again tomorrow and I'm taking Small Animal Nursing, Large Animal Nursing, Clinical Pathology, Chemistry (ha, we're gonna need some miracles to get through that class!), being a TA for Animal Anatomy & Physiology, Veterinary Work Experience, and I'm now an elected officer of our Pre-Vet Club (which entails a whole lot of commitment). ....please tell me how I'm supposed to keep my sanity? I need your help. :( (And perhaps a beer or two, or three, or ten!).
Love always,
That other dog. <3
(PS. WONDERFUL adventure you had this time, with a wonderful story to follow-- as per usual! Marilee sounds like an absolute gem, and if she was going to tell anyone her woes concerning an issue with a global impact, I'm glad it could be you. Knowing your drive to inspire and motivate, it must have been fate that she saw you as the perso-- err, rather, dog-- to spread the good word about such a noble cause as conservation. Keep inspiring and motivating, my dear... you already have a global impact on so many of our hearts already. <3)

I'm surprised by the lady's reactions honestly. I know I certainly would never have expected that. On that note however, bravo for being informadog and not just in one area either, hehe! I need to find the pictures of me wandering around the shopping mall back in my hometown before I moved and get those posted someday.

*waggwaggwaggwagg* Eeeee! A dogbomb submission!!! *reads while wagging*
I work in a large office building. Ever seen the movie office space? If not, watch it. It is hilarious. Office space sums up my work life to a tee. The building Peter (the main character) works in is about the same size and shape and has the sale colors as the building I work in. even the office brikabrack is the same. Even the same obnoxious laser printer... There are easily about 250 other drones that trudge around my work place doing their busywork. They all consume massive amounts of bottled and canned beverages.
Here on PEI we have a bottle return program. I can get between 5 and 10 cents back per unit when I turn them in at the local recycling plant. Work was just giving these containers away to be picked up by the garbage truck... I made a proposal and built a bunch of containers for people to toss their used bottles and cans in. I started taking care of them myself.
I would get about 8000 units every 4 months. Needless to say that 5 or 10 cents/unit adds up. I made some good cash with this scheme for about 2 years. When work find out this is what I was doing and I was making money off of my venture they changed their mind and started giving them back to the garbage truck... The narrow minded people didn't like the idea of me making tax free income off the company's waste products. Very narrow minded indeed...
I make sure to recycle everything I can and often dumpster dive to reuse things or sell/give the items I find to people who will. The same goes for food, I haven't paid for bread in years. I have a friend at the local bakery who hooks me up with the day old stuff which just goes straight into my freezer anyway. Recycling and avoiding things being thrown away is my way of doing my part and sometimes I can make a little money at it. I wish our disposable, instant oatmeal, prepackaged frozen lasonia society would get over the stigma of taking perfectly good things out of the trash or picking bottles and think objectively about how a difference can be made.
I admire your professor friend for doing what she is doing and I empathize with her uphill battle. I am glad she had some time with a giant dog to help her. Thanks for porting that URL, it looks like there are some great resources.
*hugs*

Just think of the fun we would have...
Isn't it silly that a company wouldn't allow you to do something
good and profit a little from it?
That just seems narrow minded of them.
Sheesh, we all live on the same planet.
Oh well, contiune to rock on and do the wonderful things you do.

We ahve bottle depots around here that accept bottles for recycling and pay $0.10 a bottle (the deposit) when you bring them in... A friend of mine and I just last week gathered up what we could find and brought in $20 worth of bottles... I couldn't see out the back of my car and we had to put one of the bags in his lap. XD I do what I can to make a difference.

You need to write a book about these semi-adventures! x3
Something along the lines of those "chicken soup for the [blank]" books, only "Chicken Soup for the Furr" Hmm?
It's amazing how something so 'radically simple' like a person in a furr-suit, can impact other people's perceptions and inhibitions. Like for example the dude needing to cheer up his irate GF...
Tho... I'm pretty sure "happy paws" doesn't generate NEARLY the same result outside said fursuit :P
