Side Note 1: NOT my best work, but the Monster of the Week were actual rats.
Zune Zune is the collective name for a horde of modified Earth Rats which were the feature monster of the week in Ep.60 of the UFO Robot Grendizer anime. Beside their numbers & been guided bombs, the Zune had no other abilities and in a first, the MotW is not a Giant Creature of any kind.
Side note 2: the episode marks the introduction of the Queen Spazer, Minister Zuril's flagship, which he rarely used.
As Vega ships appear and disappear with ease in waters close to Japan, Daisuke and the others come to the conclusion, the Secret Base is close by, so Koji and Maria depart on Double and Marine Spazer to investigate. Meanwhile, Zuril captures 1000's of rats, then proceeds to implant devices in Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Train Station. When he returns to the Queen Spazer, he had transform the rats into Cyborg Suicide Bombers called Zune Zune. Later he threatens Tokyo with destruction in nationwide broadcast, demanding Japan to Surrender to Vega; to prove his threats real he mentions both Tokyo's Tower and Station as targets to set hours.
Despite authorities not finding anything in the targets, Team Grendizer takes off investigate; By night fall, Zuril releases the Zune Zune who set out to their respective targets. As Team Grendizer continues to explore the area around Tokyo Tower (the first target), Maria is scared by the presence of Rats on the structure, and not long after the Tower explodes, making true of Zuril's threats. When Maria explains what happened and what she saw, Duke comes to the conclusion Zuril must be using modified Rats.
Exploring the areas on road to Tokyo Station, a falling construction Beam destroys some Zune Zune, the blast alerting team Grendizer to their location. Seeing the horde, Umon comes up with a plan to stop them, to avoid triggering the explosives: Koji and Hikaru position themselves next to the Station, as Hikaru unleashes a Jamming Signal, blocking the guidance of the Zune; Koji then uses Flash bombs, blinding them; Duke then guides the rats attention with two light bulbs under Grendizer, guiding them out of the city and into the shore, were Maria disposes of the creatures with Drill Missiles, avoiding any further collateral damage.
Zuril can only berate at Grendizer for another humiliating lose, as the heroes return home.
Side Note3: Feels weird doing this one after seeing Giant Monsters for 60 Eps, "BOOM!", Literal Rats. Not a bad episode, kinda fun, but I'm not fond of multiple monsters that share a same design & talents. I like me some good variations when there is more than one and it feels kinda cheap when this happens. Not Kidding: I was expecting them to grow or Combing into one Giant Cyborg Rat Monster for the final battle, but nope, this is what you get for the MofW. I can get they wanted to do a bit of variation for once – not every episode needs the Weekly Giant Monster.
This concludes the Grendizer Batch of Monsters from Ep.51 to 60; next will be the remaining Monsters of Kotetsu Jeeg from Ep.31 to 45, completing that series. After a brief respite, I'll take on Grendizer again for the final Batch of Monsters.
