Heh, Tate mode is pretty interesting. Of course, I only have one TV that could handle it, the old 19" Hitachi (made in June 1982, belonged to my grandparents once) in the spare bedroom, as the 30" widescreen CRT HDTV set weighs more than I do and the 26" widescreen LCD doesn't quite rest stably on one side.

Why not a classic like, say, Galaga? It's still a wonderful drawing, though.

Because I haven't found a Galaga port with that mode. :P Though you can do that in MAME.

Try playing it in that mode without actually turning the TV. You'd kinda have to hold the control sideways too, I think. But it'll turn a vertical scrolling shooter into a side scrolling shooter, hehe.

I've tried that! It's just something about the patterns of the bullets that makes it hard to play like that, though.

Video card options should have this option. Well, the ATI cards have it.

Control Panel > Display > Properties > Advanced > Rotation

Not everyone can rotate their monitor either :P Mine don't rotate on their stands.
