MiG-23ML S/N 0390324644 rolled off the production line at Mikoyan's "Znamya Truda" (Banner of Labor) plant outside Moscow on 24 November 1982, It made maiden flight three days later followed by seven more test flights before heading toward Czechoslovakia on 22 December 1982.
"4644" was taken on charge in April 1983 as part of 1. STL. It was based in České Budějovice (Budweis) airbase and took into the air for the first time with the Czechoslovak Air Force on April 25, piloted by F. Hlavica. It was almost written off on 23 September 1988 when an oil leak was developing mid-flight. Fortunately, the pilot, Capt. D. Mládek, managed to get the aircraft back to base.
In the final days of the Czechoslovak Air Force, 4644 attended the 1991 Royal International Air Tatoo at Fairford, UK. The aircraft was flown by Lt. Col. Josef Miler and was accompanied by MiG-29s. For the occassion, the tailfin of 4644 was adorned with the painting of the famous "Budweiser Budvar" beer bottle and logo.
While being reorganized into the newly-found Czech Air Force, 4644 was temporarily grounded in 1993 to be retrofitted with a civilian international transponder and GPS satellite navigation system.
At the turn of March and April 1994, 4644 was one of two Mig-23ML that participated in the test of Matra R.550 Magic 2 missile at Mont de Marsan airbase, France. In June, it took part in the celebrations of 50 anniversary of the D-day invasion at the Yeovilton, UK. It was in September of this year, that 4644 received its signature two-tone tiger camouflage.
4644 was decommissioned in 2000 after logging 1136 hours and 41 minutes of flight hours with 1823 confirmed landings. It is now exhibited at the gate of the Budweis airbase in Planá, Czech republic.
