There's actually a mod where you can tell them not to attack unless they attack first. Got seriously pissed when I was trying to be stealthy to improve my skills but Serana would rush to attack at the first sight of an enemy.

Follower mods that let you use a Power to tell them to wait or follow help--if you tell them to wait below the rocks, then follow once you're inside the cave, they'll spawn at the loading zone of the cave as though they successfully took your route. Unfortunately even those don't help you get your followers to leap up rocks in such a true fashion. The engine's pathing system only allows for walking and running.
