Another long-delayed bit of art finally completed. This is basically to celebrate
UnstableBill's (WHO NEEDS TO GET A BLOODY WRITING WEBSITE UP FOR ME TO LINK TO ) first furry publication! His story "Trickster" is the leadoff in the PLUG--> ROAR 2 <--PLUG compilation, released last winter.
[EDIT: He's finally posted it here on FA!]
It's hard to know quite what to say without spoilers--heck, it was hard to DRAW without spoilers--but the theme of Roar 2 is games. So, in Trickster, basically an ancient curse haunts a vacationing young wolf, his friends, and his beloved younger brother, and sets them on a hunt with some mindbending puzzles.
This is how I imagined Trickster's book cover, had I been contracted to do it as an independent publication. I worked a number of the puzzles, hopefully not obviously, into the background (and if you've read the story, no spoilers!) Sadly I had a couple concepts featuring more of the characters, but it just got too cluttered and when it boiled down to all side characters, or none, none won out. The camo shorts may seem overly standard in my art, but they were the last to be colored; everything else was vital to the characters, and you have to admit camo graphically matches the color scheme perfectly.
Almost all the coloring was done by hand, although I did alter the layout of the yellow grid slightly and then decided that was easier to do with all-digital lines. The only thing I'm not happy with is the bottom white line, but conceptually a title and author credit would have to go somewhere, so...
So, go buy it! I unfortunately have not read the whole book (it took eight months just to draw this, I don't have much reading time!) but I know there's other good stuff in it. I did catch another chapter which is a prequel to
nuwisha55's Save the Day, so most of you should be familiar with THAT COUGHAHEM

WOOHOO! Go Shep! Seriously. ^^
As for the cover. I'd love to have seen that for a cover. Hurhurhur. As for the shorts. You kidding? It wouldn't be Vince Art if there wasn't someone with those or less. At least there's no shirt. Murr...Hurhurhur XD
As for games....who doesn't love playing a few...puzzles. ;-p XD

lol, kind of. i think i went WAY too hard on them. i was hoping to have some kind of frame of references in the readers' mind, but apparently not. maybe taking a solid year to come up with the puzzles was too long, lol
seriously, if you solve them before the characters, let me know. i'll getcha somethin' <3

Nice job Vince. It's been a while since you've posted a sketch, but this is REALLY promising =) (Even though this is the first time I hear 'bout "ROAR") ^^;;;
BTW, the wolf holding the Tiki, he's a hawtie. *squeals* Hope he stays sexy enough to survive the curse, AND the puzzles to save his younger brother.
*sighs* I wish you could draw me a cover for the short story I'm workin', but oh, well. ^^;;; it's titled "Spirits Pathway"

Wait, does that mean
nuwisha55 would be interested in other people writing other stuff in the same world?
And is there any chance I could get an introduction?

Well, I know nothing about this story but I may just check it out whenever I have the time--partly because you recommend it, partly because your art makes it look so intriguing, and partly because I've always been interested in mythology and tricksters. Though your refusal to give away spoilers and the cagey answers you've given make me rather worried about these poor wolves' fates...Trickster can be fair or he can be very cruel, depending on the story and the mythos...
Nothing wrong with reusing camos if it fits the color scheme or if you just plain like them--you're the artist, do what feels right to you. And of course that wolf is hot, it's hard for a guy drawn by you not to be. ;)
Oh, and very cool design motifs with the puzzles!

Heh, I'm always adamant about not giving spoilers about others' stories away, so I can't help you there ^ ^;; I can definitely say he seems to have done his research, though. From what I've read it's a worthwhile book all around.
I don't want to seem too one-trick, yanno? Still, I suppose it's not like guys have too many options.
Danke!

True. There are at least a few stories where he isn't outright cruel and asinine, and is instead just playful and mischievous. Fair may not have been the right word...but I do remember stories, which I can't recall specifically right now, in which his mischief was only meant to test someone or learn something about them, not done out of malice, and if the person passed the test or succeeded in entertaining him, he let them go unharmed and could even give them some sort of reward.
But those were rare. Most of the time, yeah, he was a bastard.

Sadly, Amazon has no feature to inform it that you wrote for a particular book, so I'm getting all sorts of wonky recommendations now. lol

That big wolf is almost like "Take this, brother. May it serve you well. Muahahahahahah!!!"evil thunder Love the glow from the screen reflecting onto his shirt and face a bit. Hmmm. Boxes, lines, circles, wheels, snowflakes...Now I'll have to buy the book and find out what it all means! Well done and much fun!
