they're tanuki, not raccoons. tanuki ARE called raccoon dogs- but they're more closely related to dogs

uhuh.... I know the difference between a raccoon and a tanuki :| in the film their called raccoons, unless your watching it in Japanese they'll call them Tanuki.

it's a bad translation on the american part. either or, they're still tanuki in the end, 'american version' or not

I've just had a read over the DVD Box for Pom Poko and it says "A group of mischievous Japanese tanuki raccoons." so it would appear to be miss-cross translations :/

I thought the major difference between them was the tip of the tails (pointy for raccoon, round for tanuki). And i'd say the Tanooki Suit from SMB3 is to blame for the rings.
