Guardsman Arlo had been stationed in this passage for a couple years with a senior guard, who recently reached retirement age. Guardsman Trella here had a trustworthy record, and was given the station in his stead.
She's only been there for a few weeks, but since most of the time they're the only other people they see on the job, they've had plenty of time to get to know each other.

I'm guessing it's just a matter that they have extremely good eyesight that they developed in their natural environment, and they don't need it nearly as much in their new niche.
It might also have something with light sensitivity, seeing as they mostly live underground. Covering some of their eyes might help ease discomfort in brightly lit spaces.

Sounds like he's going to a funeral/burial of some kind; I don't know. Or do I? I already looked at the next page. I just never get around to faving and commenting on stuff. I'm a weird guy who abides by patterns and rituals that make no sense.
