A faithful and fastidious nurturer, Xerin Oceangrave is a stalwart officer whose discreet and cautious nature belies an innate warmth reinforced by compassion and a sincere concern for others
Xerin Oceangrave is a young man from a distant land whose life journey would one day take him from one remote corner of the Milky Way galaxy to another. In his youth, the salamander was dispatched from his home planet of Kedel on a scouting expedition to Earth if only to obtain the means through which their empire could claim more power throughout the cosmos. Being a minor nobleman, Xerin retained innate skills as a consummate shapeshifter integral to this reconnaissance effort that were wholly unique to any fortune few born from a similar station. Upon arriving in Utah’s Great Basin at age eight, the boy soon took the form of a nubile rabbit with strawberry blond hair and, at the behest of his attendants, embraced his new identity as Soren De Jonker. In this role, his task was simple yet imperative: to shield and secure a particular prisoner named Fenix Kelley, a rabbit of unique pedigree the same age as Xerin himself.
At first, all the salamander knew of this other boy was that Fenix’s aptitude for extrasensory analysis impressed his superior and set him apart from the many Earthlings they scrutinized from afar. Much like how their scouting party traversed interstellar pathways in hyperspace laid by the fabled progenitor race that supposedly seeded the galaxy in eons past, Xerin interfaced with remnants of their ancient technology to rapidly acquire the English language for the task at hand. This was all done at the behest of Xerin’s older brother who not only led the expedition but was the one who abducted Fenix Kelly from a secret facility in Colorado a month prior. At first, Xerin knew next to nothing of Earth and the mammalians who called it home, but while safeguarding the rabbit in Vernal, Utah, for two years, the meek and solicitous salamander became fascinated by Fenix’s confidence and charisma and soon sought to become less an overseer and more like a friend. Although the rabbit remembered surprisingly little of life before his internment, Fenix saw Soren and his mother as altruistic rescuers who only wished to keep him safe from the invasive scientists in white lab coats who had him surveyed at all hours.
The reptoids’ capacity to shapeshift, combined with previous reconnaissance work, made it relatively easy to assimilate into society despite the obvious disconnect; but this arrangement in Vernal would only last a year before the decision was made to relocate their whole operation to a secluded compound within the Great Basin. This compound not only operated as a supplemental refuge for most their party, but it was here, away from prying eyes, that Fenix’s psychokinetic powers were thoroughly examined for their usefulness. Although the mission’s original intent was only to collect new insight into Earth’s speculated reptilian past and the artifacts their ancestors might have left behind, a seismic shift in perspective came when the few in charge realized that Fenix, and those like him beneath the streets of Denver, could serve as invaluable assets to their cause. When it became apparent to Xerin that Fenix’s fate was one of either enslavement on Kedel or certain death, the salamander knew then he had to act decisively to save the only friend he’s ever known. Xerin waited for the moment when both he and the rabbit were to be left unsupervised, and under the pretense of escaping an imminent threat, fled into the desert with his newfound friend.
Although the pretense was mere subterfuge, Xerin knew the real reason behind the relocation, and in that moment, understood that there was no better time to flee now that their whole enterprise was endangered. In those first few days across the desert, Xerin realized in short order that he’d have to tell Fenix the truth that the people he perceived as rescuers were no better than the men in white lab coats from his nightmares. As fate would have it, the threat itself, once spectral and indistinct, revealed itself in the form of a terrifying creature with red eyes and black wings that attacked the two boys under cover of night. To fend off the attacker, Xerin had to let loose a power he’d long kept suppressed in his chosen rabbit form: fire breath. While Xerin successfully repelled the attack, he and Fenix were separated in the ensuing chaos, and regrettably, the salamander would be unable to find his friend before a search party retrieved him from the desert.
In the wake of this incident, the scouting expedition was recalled to Kedel, and Xerin Oceangrave of the Lebes Dominion promised his return to Earth one day to find the friend he so urgently wanted to save.
I'd like to use this space to thank the always-wonderful
fcsimba for all that you see here! It's through all their hard work and effort that this was made possible. I'm incredibly grateful to work with somebody who's not only enthusiastic about their work but who's also incredibly kind and professional. I can't stress just how much I love working with them so frequently!
