Also obvious disclaimer: Cartoon-level hijinks, Definitely do not try this even as a joke, it'd be super dangerous and risky.
For some reason their brothers had both suggested it. Ofenna the lioness stood with Samara, the hyena and metaphorical pebble in her shoe. They were going bungee jumping to connect to each other on a better level with a shared experience.
Ofenna had agreed only because it was a publicly shared spot, with several other people around, meaning Samara would have no chance for any of her typical hijinks. Instead people were taking turns with professionals watching over each jumper, one by one, low risk yet still high on the adrenaline judging from the squeals of the falling to the bright grin when they got up again.
When they’d arrived there the lioness felt relief at first knowing there’d be a crowd, this was followed with amusement when she saw Samara’s bitter grimace. “What, Sam, you thought you’d be let anywhere near me with enough flexible rope to turn me into a cocoon?” Ofenna whispered, quiet enough to not be overheard by the others, yet loud enough to turn a couple of heads their way.
“Sh-shut up! I knew there’d be others, just don’t make them think I’m friendly with a dork like you!” She said strutting on over with false bravado.
Ofenna rolled her eyes, she suspected Samara had been considering the ropes and cords for some kind of prank. Samara’s reaction confirmed it.
The hyena had insisted on going first when it came to the actual jump, almost physically pushing others aside if they showed any hesitancy in a manner that nearly got her thrown out. Ofenna grudgingly smoothed things over to calm down others on the condition that Samara wait for all those in queue to have had their fill. Even with that wait, soon Samara’s howls of delight drowned out all other sounds, ringing far louder than the other jumpers that had taken their turns. Her voice rang out into the deep, water-filled chasm below, echoing back upwards shortly after.
Ofenna watched from above, tentative as they fixed a chest harness for her own jump, which would take place soon, when Samara was tugged back up. The lioness noted that she was also the only one in the queue at the moment. Some had stayed to watch Samara but others had peeled away for a break- fair considering it was an average person’s lunch time.
The staff member activated an automated pulley once Samara’s jumping had concluded, the cord no longer bouncing, only swaying as the hyena pendulumed around for fun. “Ooop, goin’ up?” She yelled from below as the cord went taut and started reeling her back up. She cackled lightly trying to hang splayed as she rose, though having chosen the ankle harness she was lifted by the legs, mostly just hanging down.
“Whoa, what a rush, god damn!” She said, laughing when they got her back onto the jumping platform turning her eyes to the lion she tilted her head toward the rail. “Off you go, Fen.”
“Not just yet, ladies. Sorry, give me a minute.” The jump instructor near them said, pulling away to check something. “Just wait here, away from the edge, I’ll be right back.”
Ofenna nodded while gritting her teeth, as if the suspense wasn’t already high. She wasn’t exactly afraid of it but neither was she certain of the activity, wanting to get it over with and settle whether it was a rush or a horror and then she could tell her brother she’d hung out with Samara and be done with it.
A minute turned into five with no one coming back yet and the few who remained departing in boredom or to their work breaks depending on their role. Ofenna was staring out over the railing, looking at the valley beyond, it was quite a sight to see this high up.
Samara was grinning, silently moving closer, she’d pulled the ankle harness off on her own and snuck close to Ofenna, moving the straps around the immobile lioness’ legs. Deftly making sure they didn’t touch until they were lined up. Speed was key, she pulled the straps taut, cinching over Ofenna’s ankles and alerting the lioness. “Huh what the he-” Ofenna turned in shocked outrage as Samara stood, catching Ofenna as she tripped from the sudden lack of mobility. “Sam! Don’t you dare!”
Slinging her over a shoulder Samara took the lioness toward the edge! “Damn it all don’t you daaaaare!” Ofenna started, squealing as Samara chucked her off the platform with a fresh cackle. Both cables were securely fastened to the platforms, keeping her out of peril but the uncertain Ofenna shrieked all the way down.
Samara grinned, leering from on high, unaware that the cables had crossed over a little, she’d been so focused on her stealth and ensuring the cables were tethered to pay enough attention in between. Instead the cords had become twisted, catching Samara’s ankle as they extended and then dragging her with Ofenna. “Oh what the heeeeeell?!” She screeched as she was pulled down. She caught at the other thick bungee cord, yet her momentum pulled it to the side, sending Ofenna pinging back quicker than she should have in a most uneven way.
“Aaaaah!” Samara screamed!
“Waaaaugh!” Ofenna yelled, their noise alerting the staff above who came hurriedly out severely shocked at what they were seeing. The hyena’s limbs were lucky in some ways, tangling into the cords, anchoring her to them but the elasticated strands shot upwards wrapping comically around her and the lioness! With Samara’s writhing she’d made it all significantly worse, her leg was joined to the rope at Ofenna’s ankles, held awkwardly high while, by some freak turn of luck, she and the lioness had been coiled chest to chest by the other cord.
To preserve herself, Ofenna was trying to keep as still as possible until she could assess just what had happened, glaring daggers at the still squirming Samara. The hyena caught her look and for an instant looked scolded and sheepish before she gave a toothy, warming grin. “Haha! Surprise, Fenny!” She said as they hung there.
A megaphone called down from above. “We’re lowering an expert to see if we can get you untangled. It looks like we’ll need to lower you to a rescue boat below, though.” The voice said with the clipped tone of one being polite because he’s on duty, despite what he might want to say to the pair of them.
Ofenna’s glare was interrupted only by the occasional, sharp blink. “If you get me banned from this place with your impulsive hijinks I will kick your ass.” She growled at Samara.
“Look at it this way, it’ll probably be a few minutes before we’re on ground one way or the other, at least this way we can tell our brothers we literally bonded.” Samara replied with an energetic, good humoured grin.
The fright of the sudden fall, the panic of things going wrong and the relief of making it to some semblance of safety, with rescue looming, left Ofenna with a good mood in all. Especially with the adrenaline rush coursing through her, yet still, she refused to let any mirth hit her lips, forcing herself to be angry at the hyena.
“Aww, what’s that look for, don’t you enjoy hanging around with me?” Samara said, needling again, seeing the rage for what it was, a mask to drown out the humour.
Ofenna shut her eyes and groaned. “That’s it, I’m ignoring you now.” Wishing the day would end swiftly so she could put this encounter in the past.
