#2 - Rift
Embertrail is a world besieged. From the Cosmic Waters comes the Hollow, a primal energy that spawns alien life in overwhelming abundance. These creatures devastate entire ecosystems, supplanting them with their own, enabled by an exceptionally effective mechanism: Each Hollow creature carries a Rift within its spirit, a direct connection back to the realm that it emerged from. When it dies, that rift persists and allows Hollow energy to freely blast out - a jetfire.
This beast died (rather unpleasantly) of natural causes. Luckily, even after consuming its ex-owner's flesh as fuel, the rift is too small to be self-sustaining.
This submission is a part of one of my worldbuilding projects: The Last Dream of Embertrail.
The world of Embertrail lies at a cosmic crossroads, where strange magical structures called Monoliths frequently bring new people, ideas, cultures, and conflicts from all across the cosmic waters. It's a wild and merciless place, where the primordial forces of the universe come to life, and powerful otherworldly beings roam unchecked. On Embertrail, you could forge a new life... or it could forge one for you.
