Back from the Animation biz days....around '93 maybe ?
i was freelancing for a bunch of Vancouver studios at the time - storyboard, series development, models, etc - and sometimes there would be a week or two between projects at (a studio here unnamed) - so i'd get the occasional call from said studio like "This person came in the office and wants to develop a series - they thought we could bring in some artists and writers to do an initial work-up of the idea. But the initial work is 'on-spec' - further development will pay, but not this starting stuff." Sometimes i would turn them down, sometimes give it a go as the studio owner and i were sort of chummy and developing our own series on the side....
...anyhoo - this was such an on-spec pic i almost turned down; phone call went like this
Studio: "So he was thinking sort of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but instead he has these aliens that ride surfboards and attack planets"
Me: "... ... ... He has heard of The Silver Surfer, hasn't he ?"
Studio: "...oh ...oh, right...I forgot about that ..."
Anyway, i had a few down days and decided to give it a try...And the guy flaked, didn't pay the studio or me. It's in my contract that unused art and concepts revert to my copyright, so ....
( ........ sound of crickets ................. )
Yeah, boring story.
Posting 4K version cuz original scan of large trad art was around 7000 px tall

I don't think I could've said it better than
KenseiKitsune myself.
KenseiKitsune myself.
Hold on - there is a contraversy brewing - a hornet's nest and sharknado of piranahs thingumy : See the post below where Neill boldly proposes that there hasn't been art like this since 1984's "Heavy Metal" magazine (N.American version of the French "Metal Hurlant").
So is it early '80s or '90s ?
Will this be decided by bloody physical combat, or totally forgotten about after this strangely tedious post ?

Trouble is a brewin' at the ol' FA :
KenseiKitsune and Tai-1 maintain that this is the "most '90's thing" ...
And now you're saying there hasn't been anything like this since '84 ...
so....LET'S GET READY TO RUMB---what?
....my legal team informs me that i cannot use that phrase...it seems that some company thinks they own the word "rumble" when it is preceded by those common words. ....
my assination team now has freshly signed contracts on my legal team.

*scratches chin*
I dunno.... I was reading a lot of Palladium Books in the 90s, and this piece puts me in the mind of the sort of black and white art that often abounded in (at least) some of their earlier Rifts RPG books.
...
Which kind of makes me want a game to spiral from this. It would be pretty awesome.
