This is a watercolor painting of the stray cat that lives in my Grandmother's trailer park.
His owners moved, and instead of taking him with them they just left him behind. They just callously tossed this cat away, like he was an expendable stuffed animal instead of a living being. Being a housecat all his life, this poor fellow didn't really know what to make of the outside world.
Weeks later, he was so covered in fleas that his gums were white, and so skinny from starvation that he barely had the strength to walk anymore. Basically this cat had one foot in the grave.
My grandmother saved him, by putting out food for him and putting flea medicine on him. Slowly he got his strength back, and currently he's a very friendly, and very alive cat. The poor thing though, wants so desperately to be loved again, that he tries to go in people's houses when you open the door. He's managed to get into my grandmother's house once, and it broke her heart to have to put him back outside again. She's an old lady, and she doesn't really have the space or the time to really care for an indoor cat, but she makes sure he has clean food and water at least.
I've dubbed him Francis, and Francis the cat is currently doing fine. Once I graduate I plan on adopting this cat if he's still around, because he really is a sweet heart.
Cats (specifically, mutt alley cats), are my favorite animal because they can just take so much. I've seen horribly injured and abused cats still hang on to life, almost like they are just too damn stubborn to give up and die. Even the discarded and abandoned fellows still find enjoyment in life, and are still capable of loving despite all the horrible things they've had to go through. Cats are survivors. I'm a survivor. I see a lot of parallels between the things I had to go through in life and them, and cats hold a dear and special place in my heart. So that's why cats are my favorite animal.
I tried to do a simple, and somewhat soft watercolor painting instead of my usual very controlled and inked paintings. I like the effect, but obviously it'll take some more practice until I'm satisfied with this style.
Dedicated to all the expendable cats out there that taught me that surviving is much better than the alternative.
This is Day two from this here Meme :>
