Well, I got the wings rigged. Rigging is still a pain and I don't enjoy it very much, but I'm happy with how it came out. No fancy IKs or target tracking, just simple rotation copying and 3 control bones for feather and arm manipulation.
I prefer retopology. Way less mentally demanding.
