I feel this image sums up cutebolds as well as anything I've drawn.
Like my goblins, cutebolds were inspired by a Dwarf Fortress mod I'd made. "Kobold Camp" was a primitive modification that simplified the game vastly by forcing you to play as Kobolds, the cannon fodder of the fantasy world, the lowest rung on the XP ladder. These poor downtrodden critters are the absolute bottom of the foodchain in any fantasy world, but always seem to take it in stride. Playing as them in my mod presented a unique challenge, as you were weak, capable of only simple skills (for instance, you couldn't work with metal!), and nobody liked you. While Dwarf Fortress was about building huge, sprawling mountainhomes and mines, Kobold Camp was about eking out a living in a tiny tribal village alongside a riverbank in a forest somewhere, just trying to survive and not get mauled by wolves.
Their tireless and adorably incompetent effort in the face of adversity shaped the cutebold design into what it is today.
