Hibiscus Contract: April 2020 (4)
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
CW: Set in a real-ish world during the pandemic; so, expect COVID, death due to COVID, pro-science politics, plus lots of food/discussing food and alcoholic drinks.
April 2020: While the most consistent of places to get a good "meal" is the Hurried Hare, it has temporarily closed under shelter-at-home orders, like many other businesses. However, Odysseus and other demons that feed on human emotions have plenty of other options.
On today's episode of "these and other background facts that nobody asked about":
> Feeding on human emotions is commonly known as Aisthimasynthesis [eyes-thee-ma-synthesis] from the Greek root word for feelings and suffix -synthisis. This will come up in the story, but they don't "eat" emotions like a vampire drinks blood (and it's considered tacky to call them "emotional vampires" for that reason) - it's more like how a plant takes in the ambient energy from the sun, or a wind farm converts wind into energy.
> Typically, no two demons that synth emotions (or aisthimasynthesize, but fuck, that's long) taste them the same way. There may be similarities ("Oh, anxiety tastes like citrus to you, too?") but the chances of another demon's flavors lining up exactly are vanishingly small.
> Demons are evil in a similar way that corporations are evil. They don't "bwahaha", but there are things that are more important than human feelings - namely, themselves and what they thrive on, whether it's emotions, or souls, or whatever. Sometimes their interests diverge from each other, such as demons that are invested in fossil fuels and making contracts with humans who profit vs demons who are concerned about their longevity when humans are cooking themselves under climate change.
Some of this will be mentioned and some of it won't - this is just worldbuilding stuff that I love and spend too much time wondering about. xD

Well, Odysseus' friend here seems like fun!
The demons don't need to add any fuel to this fire, we have the uneducated and entitled masses doing plenty of that on their own!
Dear god, the "I WANT A HAIRCUT" sign... I remember that crap!
Finally, I like both the idea of the powers that be having tied to earthly monies, and the fact that emotions seem to taste different to each demon. A very unique take, here. :) Plus I like the "powers that be" line leaves it open to BOTH sides having capitol tied up in this mess! XD

She's not in the story very often, but I do like her! You know, from a distance, lol. She's a much more hands-on sort of demon than Odysseus.
I read a book called The Dirty Streets of Heaven that had An Incident(TM) that was such a big deal that both heaven and hell put on the breaks and made some rules, and I imagine that a global pandemic is something similar. Until further notice, everything is on fire, don't touch anything! To your point, we've got enough people fucking it up as it is.
