Nope! Actually, it's another name for red panda! :3 (Many of us say it too, but technically it's a nickname for red panda.) The Sherpa people of Nepal and Sikkim call them "ye niglva ponva" and "wah donka", which is where that comes from. The scientific name "ailurus fulgens" comes from the Greek word "αἴλουρος" ("ailouros"), which means "cat", and the latin word "fulgens" means "shining, bright".
Red pandas can also be called:
wah
firefox
fox-bear
common panda
true panda
panda*
lesser panda
bright cat
cat-bear
himalayan raccoon
*For those who don't know: Red pandas were discovered by the Western world approximately half a century before the giant panda. The giant panda was called a "panda" because it was believed to be related to the [red] panda, as they both had similar traits of false thumbs (which look like they have a total of 6 digits per paw) and they both eat bamboo. They were later determined to be unrelated (giant pandas are ursids, red pandas are ailuridae), but at that point people kept calling the big bears "pandas". Probably some blame rests on WWF for making the giant panda more well-known in the Western world, but on a more factual level, "panda" actually refers to RED pandas, NOT giant pandas!

Ah, at first I thought it might be onomatopoeia, and then I thought maybe it was more internet "birb pupper heckin' chonker doggo" babbyspeak, but there's actually something to this, nice!
I ended up using another regional name for the red panda, the Limbu word "kaala" (meaning "dark"), as the name of a baby red panda character I created a few years back.
Thanks for clearing that up! I often feel very out of the loop when it comes to furry things like calling a panda a "wah" or the various memes and themed days/weeks.

Great news... Pandas seem to be the perfect size to cuddle!
Not too big, and not too small. Just right. Like a teddy bear with a fluffy tail!

It's Sad Panda Hours though because it's Sad Artist Hours lately. I guess it just hits a bit different when it's a normally cheerful and playful character of a normally playful and fun species, doesn't it?
