Oop... looks like you caught Nuuk just as he was finishing up his sunset meditation... seems to not mind your staring though. Is that a slight smirk on his maw? Little wiggle of those toes at you?

So holy CRAP was this ever a long time in the making! I decided to try colouring this one lineless and semi-realistic... man, I had no idea how much work that would turn out to be. :P The very first thing I started to work on was the footpaw (naturally) which I wanted to have really great detail on the sole. By the time I had done that, it looked great, but then I realized I needed to try and do the same sort of detail (or at least close) for the rest of him, and that's what took so long.
Creating the background was a nightmare in itself too. I used a sunset from a picture I had, but the light was wrong as was the cloud layout, so in the end it ended up being more of a template which helped me recreate it by lots of brushing and smudging. The hills and sand were all done from scratch as were the rays of sunlight. The water was the one thing that was mostly just pulled from another beach image I had after many failed attempts to make water look right. :/ The sand... well, sucks... I just can't seem to get that to look right.
Anyway, BIG thanks to
cathulu for this for all the tips and suggestions (and encouragement), and for the use of her purdy sole as a guide for how the sole should look, and lastly for the use of her Bamboo tablet after the cord on my Wacom gave up. >_< Also, thank you to
teaselbone for tips on how to do subtle back-lighting in shadowed areas; really helps give it depth!
Enjoy everyone! Will be posting a close-up of the footpaw later. :)
Edit (SEP-09-2013): FINALLY decided to name this guy, meet Nuuk. Hopefully I can eventually draw more of him (and improve on his kinda awkward looks, heh)

Nice, you finished it! :D Awesome job, TC, I'm really impressed by the detail, lighting, color work, and such (the photo integration is great, too--I couldn't really tell that the water was an untreated section of photo and not something that was touched up). You've put a lot of time and effort into this and it really shows--congrats on a job well done! :)
Hey there, TC! Great to see you posting artwork again!
If you'd welcome it, some critique:
First off, I think the background is simply gorgeous. I'm a little confused by your description - is any of this background photographic, or is it from previous work of yours? If it is the latter, the sky and water are quite incredible. As for the sand, I think this looks great, but I think you could probably have done with keeping the texture smaller at the closest level for greater realism. The 'middle-distance' sand does look very realistic as such, so if that level of texturing could be brought closer, you'd probably have it spot on in my view.
Nice work as well with Teasel's little tip on backlighting - it's one of those things that is quite subtle but really does make a huge difference. Light reflects from so many surfaces in a way which is easily ignored. I think in some places you have this absolutely spot on - the only areas I'd stress for improvement on this front would be the torso, as the lines of the muscles therein are rather too distinctive. Other than that, a great effort at the lineless technique. And well - the wrinkly texture on the sole is just delightful!
I suppose the next thing it would be great to see you move onto is improving the anatomical study itself - not something I would ever claim to be an expert on given that I still feel I somewhat muddle through on musculature, but I think there is room to develop there if you're willing to keep practising at it.
Aside from that, TC, great job. And you're right - this stuff does take up a ridiculous amount of time. I myself really struggle to get pieces of such quality out any more because my job eats my week and invariably leaves me too tired at the weekends - not to mention also needing to find time for the part-time web journalism I do outside of my full time job!! So I can well understand this type of work demanding inordinate amounts of time and effort. On that note, kudos to you for sticking at it.
Well done!

The water is a detail-burred photograph. The sky started out that way, but the position of the light, clouds and other aspects of it made me opt to try digitally painting it instead. I chose colours from an altered sky image and used brushes and lots of smearing to create it. It's one of those rare things that turned out better than I planned. :P
The sand... oi, I know - I hate the sand in this. I know just what you mean about it being too coarsely textured too - I tried to do a finer job of it later on, but it was too fine and didn't show up in the resized one. After a while, I just gave up on trying to get it right otherwise I'd have never posted the thing. :/
And yeah - plan to keep at the anatomy. This pic was based on (and you'll get a chuckle out of this) Beth Phoenix (from the WWE) for the top half, and me for the bottom half. There was this action shot of Beth that was just awesome for the post and position of the arm and such, but I had to assume the pose myself to get the right leg position and right-arm position. I drew the chest by hand, and yeah... again, in hind sight I realized some of the shading was too prominent on it, but there are some things that are too difficult to go back and fix (if not impossible) so had to leave it. Anatomy is a pain. ^^;
Thank you though for the advice and kind words - much appreciated! Also, you'll be happy to know (if you didn't see it already) there's a close-up version of it for the footpaw. :D

Nice sir, about time you finished it ;)
Love the background! And I can really see the detail in the foot here and the other picture you posted with the closeup. Looks good! I think the arms look a little off (also cheating by making both hands into fists!) ;) but the coloring looks really goood, especially the texture'd lights on the black.
Now you just need to draw a whole bunch moar! :D MOAR

Thank you Masterbone! Hey - couldn't have done a lot of this without your sagely advice. :) Yeah, right arm is slightly off - think it's a result of combining one pose reference with another. And shush - my reference pics had hands in fists! Meh... in hindsight, I should have opened the hand on his leg though. Ah well - things to remember for next time, aye?
And yes sir... moar shall come! Need to get my Wacom fixed too. :P

I'm there when you post it....and I forget to favourite the picture and comment. *head-desk*
Toeclaws, it's so good to see this finished and up here. I've seen every stage it's gone through, all the hours of work you've put into it, and just when I think you were finished, you do something to it and make it even better.
Plus...I'm completely flattered that you used my foot as a reference for this ^_^ This is sexy, awesome, and one of your best pieces, man. congrats!
Soooo....when are you doing the next one epic colouring pic?
