What is your worst memory?
In all your life, what is the worst moment you have ever had to sit in? Is it old, or new? And the pain that comes with it- does it sting or is it more a dull unknown, ache?
In a life as long as Reino's, there might be a thousand separate candidates for the worst memory; perhaps the time accidentally encountered the pool of souls as a young child. So many screams and desperate pleas had been nothing short of nightmarish, and had left him glued to his mother's side for a week. Or maybe the night his demonic powers awakened. It was a blur of confusion and agony. He was just a teenager when that happened, but the feeling of wings growing much too large, much too quickly, all but bursting violently from the back isn't something easily forgotten. It could even be recent events, watching his daughter only become more and more miserable as old magic ran circles around her mind.
But In the space between moments, as the blinding flash of pink hit his wings...only one memory surfaced. As agreed he'd taken their baby, moments old, straight home- for she would be killed if she was found. It would seem the tiny creature's first act would be to claim his heart- for never in his life had he flown so far, so fast or landed so carefully. After ensuring the baby would be safe he flew straight back to the forest, in sheer panic. He'd seen torches in the distance when he left Arella's side, if he wasn't fast enough the order would reach her before he could. And they did.
How do you watch quietly as your wife is condemned to death? you do it standing dead still, hidden in the trees. The high priestess was a menace, and with every step she took closer to Arella he could feel himself growing more and more infuriated. Somewhere along the flight back he had slipped into his second form, in this state he could try anything...But with all of the order being users of light magic, he knew it would not be a fight he could win. So silently, he watched...and thought it admirable that even in an incredibly weakened state -having just given birth- his wife might still try and fight her attackers off.
As she spat, and directly challenged the high priestess, for a moment pride overtook the great sorrow building in his heart. She was using the last of her strength for this, it was obvious; with the normally blinding light she emitted now only a pale, dull glow. Never had it been clearer that everyone in this wretched scene was now running on borrowed time. A million voices inside his mind screamed at him to do something, anything, as the circle surrounding Arella grew tighter. Now he could barely make out any words that were being said. Both sets of Reino's eyes widened as as the high priestess raised her arm, her palms glowing with sacred light.
"This will be your last chance. Tell us where to find the child."
"Never."
"Then your fate is sealed."
"Go on then...do..it."
