I don't think there's that much of an issue. In some ways we all have ulterior motives whenever we talk to people.
Come to think of it, isn't that exactly what we're doing every single time we meet someone new? I mean, like in general. To scope them out, see what they're like and if you'd like to meet with them again later on?
I mean we can try to not have an ulterior motive, but let's face it. That's why we do it to begin with. ,,,L (^_*)

Fair enough. Just the idea that they approached the crew, acting all friendly-like, when they were actually trying to determine if they were a threat and whether or not they helped Grant escape. I sure as hell know I'd be pissed if someone who acted friendly with me was actually trying to see if I was a threat or not; you're wondering if someone's a threat, say it to their face. Sorry, I'm just not real big on deceit, no matter the reason. Come to think of it, was ANY of their friendliness genuine?
Well, they did get themselves arrested when they could have just walked away or told that douche "the truth", but they didn't. If none of it was genuine, do you really think that they would have done that for some ehem, and I quote, "feline colony stray"... please excuse quoting the douche.
Then again, the guy was a douche in general, so option two wouldn't have been chosen anyway. I know the type a bit too well...
Ehem, point is, I think all of it was genuine enough that the other part was simply secondary, probably even third. It's not like they specifically went to the restaurants to specifically spy on them... and became friends by chance. As likely as that scenario can be with that sweet butter muffin Toby.

So my plan (just to tip my hat a bit and maybe put people at ease) was the leave the door open for these guys to show up a little later in their part time job -- as some old bounty hunters. Probably could have left it alone though. Would have been a little more satisfying.
Still, they are certainly fairly genuine and have a sense of concern.
For some reason even early on they were always interested in figuring out what Rowan's deal was -- if she held her father's beliefs or not. So I kinda got that stuck in my head.

Fair enough. Just feel a little betrayed, that's all. Kinda puts everything they said or did into question, you know? Makes me feel a little silly for pulling for them.
Sorry, sometimes I get worked up over silly little things. Just a little frustrating to think that even you thought that you should have gone with them just being Cool Old Guys instead of whatever the hell they were doing. XD As I said elsewhere, I've little patience for those with ulterior motives or who put on a front.

For a growing writer, you've shown yourself to be quite skilled; I'm certain this will pay off at some point. :) Plus, you said it wasn't an investigation in a traditional sense, so it's not like they're part of a spy agency, and they were just playing a part. XD You know, maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Maybe they ARE legitimately cool old guys who happened to have a bit of an ulterior motive. 30 years old, and I STILL have a tough time dealing with shades of gray. XD
I like that kind of turn. Giving those short term characters a bit more of depth and hey - keeping an eye out on someone hasn't to be something bad will happen.
Old guys who grew up in a different time may have deep in their personality things younger folk doesn't understand and vice versa. That's why it is good for both the old and the young to be in contact and talk to each other. So older people can learn the view of the youth and the younger ones can see the world out of the eyes of the old people they tend to name stupid in general nowadays. Everyone can benefit from acting like that.
Without that little extra here that story would just be another happy pink cloud world story. You put realism into it and I am happy when artists do that. Let me enjoy furry comics even more.

True; I guess that just called into question how much of their friendliness and cool old guy persona was genuine and how much of it was an act, at least initially. Like I said earlier, though, no reason they can't be both legitimately nice, cool old guys and have something of an ulterior motive.
That's good to hear!
I like those kind of circles: We enjoy your work, talk about it, you also say something and in the end we might differ with some opinions towards this or that part of the story but in whole have all a good time over your creation.
Sometimes it is so easy to just live a good life. :)

I guess part of the reason I got upset was that part of the reason they did what they did was to see if Rowan was anything like her father. Obviously, they deduced that she was NOTHING like Grant, but Rowan's been trying to escape that prick's shadow for Who knows how long, so I kind of feel for her.
Also, good point about the realism, but I don't like it when stories have too much of it. That's why I worried that the security officer was gonna side with his cousin and screw the heroes and the vets) over. But I like to think that, overall, this story skews slightly further toward the optimistic.
