**MAJOR RUBY QUEST SPOILERS AHEAD**
Red is probably the most popular Ruby Quest character outside the two protagonists. He's confident, mysterious, stylish. He has his own way about things. And he's crazy.
Red's tragedy is that he is, essentially, the one who started the nightmare. He's troubled enough to commit suicide even through his madness, and does so in such a way that he won't be brought back. He seems manic and confident, but beneath his grinning facade Red is consumed by the guilt of knowing he is responsible for the horrors around him.
He oversaw the project, and he was the one who discovered the sunken chamber beneath the brig that the facility had been built atop of (it was suggested that the architect of the Metal Glen had chosen that spot to build because he too had been "called" to it, as Red was). Whatever force called out to them from beneath the sea was unearthed when excavation uncovered the ancient chamber and the artefacts within. It was also Red's idea to test the properties of the strange materials found below, and he came up with the "treatment" that would ultimately plunge the facility into the depths of horror.
While overseeing the project, things took a turn for the worse when Ruby, under the influence of the treatment, murdered Stitches by throwing him off the catwalk. Despite Dr. S's suspicions, Red was able to cover this up long enough to keep Ruby out of isolation, thus giving him a chance to attack and murder her himself. While the act was initially seen as crazed violence, Red writes mournfully of it in his journal, begging for forgiveness and confessing he only did so in an attempt to free Ruby from the madness he brought upon her and give her peace. Unfortunately, the treatment overcame even that attempt.
When things continued to go wrong, he took the coward's way out, thinking he would escape the nightmare because he had secretly not been taking the prescribed treatment which would return him to life in such an event. But the mysterious "Dr. S" had discovered this fact, informed the administrators, and orderly Ace had begun slipping the medication to him without his knowledge. Red managed to kill himself, but the respite from his horrible reality was short lived, and he returned as the others had. Ace eventually became Red's 'keeper' and he never forgave the orderly for thwarting his suicide. The vicious rivalry between the two grew over who knows how many cycles and attempted deaths, and culminated with Red's final, successful suicide. Red starved and dehydrated himself for a long period, subsisting only on dry cereal and non-circulated water, giving him an even more emaciated appearance, until he believed the treatment was completely purged from his system. Then, with his body falling apart and sloughing with chaotic growth, he was finally able to make good on his attempts.
For all his implied violence, Red actually sympathizes with the protagonists. He cares about them. If he were more sane, perhaps he would try apologizing -- maybe he has in the past. He wants to help them, even through his veil of madness.
The most contested puzzle in all of Ruby Quest is Red's Riddle. He asks for a cryptic thing and tells Tom and Ruby to go get it. Technically, the Godawful Smoothie (made of blended body parts to fit the riddle) WAS the answer, but the riddle was a red herring in the first place: Red only gave it to them as a means to keep them busy while he set up his final exeunt. He simply wanted them to far away when the bomb went off.
Everyone in Ruby Quest is a tragic figure to some extent, but I think Red's guilt and the inescapable belief that he is at fault for everything makes him a strangely sad character for as manic as he appears. For Red, there is no happy ending.

Oh my Gosh! IS IT REALLY YOU? :DDDD Ruby's Quest saved me from dying of boredom last summer! It was so entertaining... I couldn't even believe how sucked in I got. Do me a favor and listen to Roppongi Panic by Candy Dulfer on Youtube and tell me if it fits the mood at all. It was my favorite song at the time but I listened to it during all episodes of Ruby's Quest and now I can't think of anything but the characters and mood when I listen now. lol
Do you know about tekstation here on FA? He compiled all the episodes of Ruby's Quest into Flash videos so that you could easily navigate through them. He even included reactions and fan-art from the chan board throughout the story. Have you seen those yet? :D
I had so many questions by the time the story ended. Any chance I can ask any of them in a note? I'll make sure to read all these character profiles first to make sure you didn't answer any of them. XD
Anyway, sorry for the TL;DR. You're already kind of a celebrity here on FA as I'm sure you're starting to notice.
Red scared me the most out of all the characters. That grotesque grin... the fact he was acting friendly... whatever gibberish he was spouting behind the door just before the suicide. I was so sure he was a ticking time bomb and that he was happy with the way things were going and counting down the minutes until he'd destroy everyone. His end was unexpected for me.

I always loved Red the most out of all the characters. As creepy as he was, it was in a playful way, completely unlike Filbert. Like he was fully aware of what he was. His lighthearted threats and toothy laughter made him seem dangerous, but he was still a dapper man. Like perhaps he wouldn't directly try to hurt us, but he was dangerous by association. Bad things might happen if we hung out with Red too long. Or he might snap and lash out without thinking. He had that standoffish but intriguing quality that made me want to get close, but too scared to really try to bridge the gap. Red himself was a puzzle.
Red always seemed like such a loner, emphasized by the way he would suddenly vanish, the way he would always passively do something completely unrelated to the quest ("Can I borrow those two coins?") like Ruby just chanced to meet him while he was doing something else. Even little things like the flashback where he was reading by himself, or the way his notes always seemed to think he had to do everything himself. I don't think the idea of teamwork ever really occurred to Red. He might not have had a lot of friends. Not because he was unpopular, but because Red's brain just doesn't work that way.
In that way I was always really sad about Red's death. I felt like we could have saved him, but he didn't want to or think he could be saved. Like there might have been a chance if only we had gotten through. In the end he got the ending he wanted, but it still makes me very sad. I wish he had got a happy ending.
