Methyska the Espeon stood before a vast patch of tall mint plants with wide leaves and
big purple flowers shaped like bells. They were as tall as the old Espeon’s ears when they stood
erect.
Sophia the Vibrava landed by the Espeon’s side, her developing wings exhausted by the
short flight across the garden.
Methyska lifted her muzzle to the fragrant plants, breathing slowly and deeply, her ears
tipped back like she were relishing the touch of a warm hand combing its supple fingers through
her coat, and kneading her skin.
“Ah, I was waiting for you Sophie.” The Espeon said, as the dragonfly folded back her
wings. “These plants, they and I love each other dearly. They were calling out, asking me to
bring you to them. They say they want to meet you.”
The young Vibrava cocked her head.
“They wanna meet me, huh?”
Sophia approached tentatively, taking an explorative sniff.
“What is this stuff? It smells like -“
Her breath was taken as the scent made contact with her olfactory nerves.
A delicate tingling spread through the Vibrava's head as the triggering particles, invisible
and countless in their millions, drifted through the air in her lungs, and clung to her antennae.
“Oh, oh my -“
“Yes. Isn’t it wonderful?”
Sophia brushed her face against the nearest plant. Blushing, her tail thumped against
the ground like an overjoyed puppy, as the stalks lured her into the patch, engulfing the Vibrava
as the Espeon followed.
Sophia could barely contain herself.
“Methyska, what is this stuff? What’s even happening to me? What is this feeling?”
“This is hallowmint.” Said the old Espeon. “Humans call it pokénip. It reaches into us, it
eases our pain, makes our flesh tingle, lets our thoughts come clearly, and lets our words and
actions come easily, and from the truest part of ourselves.
“It also -”
“This is the best thing ever! It’s like my blood is laughing!”
Sophia’s wobbling legs gave out beneath her, the Vibrava rolling on her back, pawing at
the air with her twig-like feet and wiggling in the plants, letting their scent stream down onto her
as she looked up into Methyska’s eyes, feeling something light up in her heart she never felt
before, that made her tremble with some strange thrill.
The Espeon smiled warmly at the her friend’s face, alight with wonder, and a newly born
hunger the younger creature had yet to recognize in herself.
“Yes, Sophia. And that’s merely from smelling it.
Wait until you’ve eaten some.”
Sophia was agape.
“You can eat this stuff?”
“Yes, but not in this form.
But I trained my human to harvest this plant, distill its oil, and infuse it into honey.”
“You can put this stuff in honey! I freaking love honey! Oh my god!”
“Shh Sophia, calm down.
“It’s only honey.
“So, would you want to try some then?” Methyska offered.
Sophia’s mouth watered, she felt hungry like she’d never eaten in the whole of her life.
“Yeah. Please.”
The Espeon grinned.
“And so, Sophia.
Aside from honey, what else would you want to try?”
Sophia chuckled nervously, the Vibrava’s wings buzzed with flustered tension.
She lifts the Espeon’s paw with her forefoot, closing her digits around it for the first time.
Shivering, she could barely make the words come out.
“You know. And you know I can’t say it. It’s too weird.”
“Well I can hear you think it. And it’s normal, and good, and you have my permission. So
go ahead. Trust your instincts.”
Methyska laid close with Sophia and presented her head to the Vibrava.
With a forefoot, Sophia petted the Espeon between the ears with caution and curiosity,
testing the feel of the greying lavender fur slipping between her digits.
The Espeon accepted the gesture, the fur along her back bristling. Sophia had never
seen her friend so happy, and had never felt so happy herself as to feel that joy erupting within
Methyska.
“Very good.” Sighed Methyska. “More please, right behind my ears. Don’t be shy, you’re
doing well. Trust yourself.”
Knowing she was safe in exploring, Sophia's petting migrated to Methyska’s big, silkfurred ears, their owner purring delightedly, flinching and flicking her tail like the happy beast
she was.
“That’s perfect Sophia. Are you sure you’re new at this?”
“How can this feel so good? Is this like… what humans feel when they pet us?”
Sophia wrapped her forelegs around Methyska’s upper body, running her digits through
the fur along her back and squeezing the Espeon close to her.
“No, that’s something different. Only we can feel this.”
Methyska paced a forepaw upon Sophia's head, gentling her between her antennae,
which wiggled ticklishly at the touch.
Sophia took a long, deep breath. The air was thick with mint essence, seeping into her
blood through her lungs and making her chest tingle, like she was breathing gaseous sunlight
as the moon shone high.
“Why?” The Vibrava asked.
“Because we’re special.”
“You and me?”
“Yes, and all of us creatures.”
Methyska’s long forked tail coiled tenderly around the tail of the dragonfly, the latter of
which came to rest, no longer wagging giddily. The Espeon gently touched her forepaw to
Sophia’s wing, and the soothing contact softened their thrilled buzzing down to a contented
hum.
The plants whispered into Sophia’s antennae, stirring ancient currents that ran warm and
deep through her, as they had all her ancestors before her. Sophia listened to those whispers,
and as she obeyed she was rewarded with an energizing light that shone through her spine.
Sophia wasn’t ready for the depths of those meandering rivers of affection, but here,
floating securely on the surface in the embrace of her friend, she was safe, and could let her
guard down, and her mind wander.
The Vibrava forgot all about thinking, and just laid against the heat of Methyska’s fluffy
body, enjoying the strange delight of it all, as the Espeon’s thoughts, drifting like distant
whispers in a strange language, grazed like velvet against the boundaries of her own mind.
And then, with all the glee and fascination she had in her, Sophia noticed something
incredible, that she was certain no being had ever discovered before, and pressed her forefoot
to Methyska's chest.
“Your heart is beating.”
“Yes, it is Sophia. I'm glad you noticed. So is yours.”
Sophia pressed her forefoot to her own chest, feeling her own heartbeat, like for the very
first time.
“That’s so great. I’m so happy I was born.”
Sophia sighed joyfully, tears welling up in her eyes.
“I’m happy you were born, too.” Said Methyska.
The moon was high and powerful the sky, and the sun was hours from rising.
But upon the Vibrava’s back, and her front, and all over, it was like the sun was shining
just for her, the a sun of a gentle spring day, its presence potent, and yet yielding, all invisible to
the Vibrava's eyes, but irresistibly real as it settled on her skin and on her wings from every
direction.
Sophia shuddered happily again as Methyska blew gingerly upon her antennae. A silvery
breeze rustled the plants around them, the leaves and the flowers showering them with invisible
pollen, which the Vibrava licked from Methyska’s fur, breathing deep the intoxicating particles,
and the scent of her friend. She purred and groaned with each breath.
“Oh, yes, I am intensely happy. And if you want to truly know how happy I am, and how
much I’ll always treasure this moment with you, just look into my eyes, Sophia.”
The Vibrava, barely thinking, obeyed, trusting her friend like how she trusted her own
heart to beat. She felt something smooth and relaxing slip through the folds within her brain, and
the neurons down her spin, connecting at every single cell, as Methyska took hold of her mind.
Sophia moaned, and dug her digits deeper into Methyska’s fur.
“Methyska -“
“Yes, Sophie. Breathe. Look right into my eyes, and breathe, just like you're doing now.
You don't need to think, or worry, just let your mind go silent and supple.
“Just follow that magic that's flowing between us, as your thoughts mingle with mine, and
let us grow ever closer…”
Sophia laid her cheek against Methyska’s muzzle, and her eyelids drooped, as the
embracing Espeon continued to admire her.
“Don't think, don't worry, just follow, and listen…”
Something sudden and solid happened that Sophia didn’t know a word for, and in a way
she never knew was possible, she found herself, for the first time ever, no longer alone, her
being merged with her partner’s.
She brushed Methyska’s whiskers with her forefoot as tears began to fall.
“Wow.”
They touched noses.
“That's right.
“Just feel the joining of our minds, and enjoy.
“Feel the morning breeze gentle my fur, feel my tail coiled around yours as it tastes the
nectar of the reflected sunlight of the night. Feel the breeze gentle my fur, feel my ears tingle as
they glow with the love of your touch.
“Now keep those pretty eyes of yours open, and also see through mine. See how
gorgeous you are as I hold you against me.”
It wasn’t electric between them, but it was something just as alive, and real, and
powerful.
“Wow, Methyska. I feel it, and see it. Everything.”
“Yes. And I can feel everything you're feeling too. Your wings whose voice brightens the
sky with each brief flight, those swift sensitive antennae sensing the air for the call of your
friends, and warning of enemies.”
Methyska relishingly caressed Sophia’s antennae with her whiskers, making them both
squirm giddily, the dragonfly giggled aloud.
“Yeah.”
Even after all these years, Methyska never ceased to wonder at the deep pleasure of
simply smiling with someone she cared for.
“And I can feel your heart pounding, Sophie.”
“Yeah.”
“This isn’t a race you know. You only have so many heartbeats to spend in your lifetime.
“Don’t be nervous. This is nothing you aren’t ready for.
“Whisper to your heart, whisper gently to him and tell him to slow down.
“Tell your heart to listen to mine, to beat slow, but strong, and steady, like mine.
“And let’s let our hearts beat together for a while.
“We needn’t do anything more.”
Moments later, or perhaps hours, Sophia spoke again, and babbled into the Espeon’s
fur, sobbing joyously.
“I love you Methyska.”
The Vibrava closed her eyes, the intensity of that violet warmth overwhelming her as she
surrendered her conscious and was engulfed again by Methyska’s loving spirit and brilliant
intelligence.
Methyska cradled Sophia’s head again with her forepaw, tenderly guiding the Vibrava's
attention toward her face, and she daren’t look away now. The Espeon flicked her ears, and
shivered, and purred, and laughed as she licked Sophia’s tears away.
“I love you too, Sophia.”
Having but the vaguest sense of what she was attempting, the Vibrava, with her emerald
eyes bright and eager, did something to Methyska's face that involved using her mouth, which
the Espeon patiently cooperated with.
The pair awoke in the silver mist of the sun as the first rays of dawn were poised on the
horizon, in an affectionate tangle of wings and limbs and tails.
Life was good.
