Alurians can regenerate lost tails and digits. Entire limbs don't tend to come out quite right, but if you lose a finger, most times all you need to do is be patient. Some of the more cruel parts of the world see this limited regeneration as an opportunity to dole out brutal punishments.
Sengilar didn't have the resources to take care of the wound when he lost his tail tip. Even years later, the remaining scar tissue is prone to irritation and needs frequent care.
