A simple drawing of a pair of de Havilland Hornets flying over a Royal Navy task force led by the carrier HMS Africa and consisting of the cruisers Swiftsure (Minotaur class) and Centurion (Neptune class) and the destroyers Broadsword (Weapon class), Malplaquet (Battle class), and Carronade (Weapon class); the task force is on exercise in the South Atlantic, steaming between the Falklands and South Sandwich Islands.
The Africa class were built as a result of the demand for new carriers, as the Royal Navy lost the bulk of its prewar carrier force to the French, Soviets, and Japanese and needed new ones quickly. Similar in size to the contemporary US' Midway class and Germany's Koniggratz class, they were the largest carriers in the fleet until the launch of HMS Queen Elisabeth in 1972. They were the centerpieces of the postwar Royal Navy, seeing much action during the Great Pacific War and HMS Gibraltar was committed to combat the Argentine carriers in the Falklands War.
