Ptolemaic army's mainstay was greco-macedonian ancestry soldiers, which colloquially called kleruchoi, or katoikoi like all other diadochos countries. However, its supply could never meet demand. so Ptolemaic dynasty got to levy its non greek populations. especially egyptians.
Machimoi were hereditary soldiers that given lands in exchange of military services, not far from kleuchoi in concept. only that machimoi were consist of native egyptian. machimoi heavy infantry formation met its real battle for the first time in BC 217, battle of Raphia, where Ptolemy IV Philopator's army met Antiochos III Megas' host. machimoi phalanx endured heavy pounding besides of their greek comrades, and earned a victory. after that, Ptolemy monarchs were more willing to equip and train natives as heavy infantries.
