The first black Secretary of State passed away this week. Colin Powell was among the great. Military man, Vietnam vet, Gulf war, son of immigrant parents, served under Bush jr as Secretary of State, Plus Joint Chief of Staff Chairman. And twice recipient of the Medal of Freedom .
He passed away from complications of Covid-19 due to his blood cancer.
I should have gotten this up Monday, but was out of town for a memorial service and didn't get the chance til today.

It's always difficult with people like him who have a long carer. So much to respect, but also so much to criticize. We're all flawed people, yet we desire flawless role models. It is indeed difficult.
On the plus size, seeing the bad means that you are willing to make an honest assessment and aren't in a cult.

Looking into his history, it sort of feels like he was a bit too far to the left to truly be a Republican and a bit too far to the right to be a Democrat, but those are the only two real choices in American politics. Feeling over time that the Republican party changed too much isn't necessarily "going woke", it just sounds like the party went in a direction he was uncomfortable with.
Okey-doke. Difficult as it may be sometimes, I love ya Rabbi. But DAMN.
EVERYBODY in the government, Democrats and Republicans alike, seem to be stumbling over each other to sing the praises of this war criminal, "Good Soldier", and toady for U.S. imperialism.
So many Americans seem to have a short memory or to be completely ignorant of their actual history. Not to mention the way that the rest of the world or the greater perspective of history might regard our government's actions.
i suppose he can be praised for being able to change his mind as the Republican party has made its slide towards fascism, and admitting his regret for parroting the lies that led us into the Iraq war. But that war, which pretty much everybody seems to agree was a huge blunder, directly resulted in the destruction of Iraq's government and infrastructure, the death of more than a million of its people, and, consequently, the breeding of countless U.S.-hating potential "Terrorists". (Bastard that Saddam was, needless to say.)
Towards the beginning of his career, he was an apologist for the Mylai massacre, and was caught out in that. And in the eighties he was behind the U.S. training and backing of the death squads and the brutal demise of hundreds of thousands of people in Nicaragua, Guatemala, etc. He was also behind the brutal and illegal assassination of Noriega in Panama.
So, hero? Yeah, I suppose he might have had his moments. The legacy of any soldier is a complicated one. Unfortunately it's bound to include murder and brutality, that's in the job description. One might question how much heroism is actually part of such a legacy, but that's a much larger discussion. He may have been a likable, charismatic guy, but a typical soldier isn't responsible for death and destruction on the level which he was. History will not smile on his greater legacy.

I'm thankful somebody shared this already. If we just make dissent about his relationship to Democrats or Republicans, we miss the whole story. This man is a war criminal.
I have a hard time celebrating someone who would prefer covering up the My Lai massacre, and then decades later propped up one of the worst crimes against humanity in recorded history.

Sadly, I think a lot of Americans are just ignorant of our actual history.
Unfortunately Powell is just one in a long line of war criminals in our government. This would include many of its much lauded top members, most of our last bunch of presidents included, dating all the way back to Truman.
People need to realize and come to grips with the destruction to our country and the planet done by our government in the name of empire, the Military Industrial Complex, and corporate capitalist greed in general. It's frankly embarrassing, and incredibly shortsighted. Not to mention a tragic waste of our energy and resources, and a squandering of whatever goodwill we might have built up in the eyes of the rest of the world.
And thanks for your comment.

"Leadership is about solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership." -Colin Powell.
Straight-up one of my favorite quotes about leadership from anyone and the attitude I'd try to keep if I end up in a leadership position.
