When animals considered to be "prey" by the apex predators of the world begin to band together for safety, where does it leave those caught in between?
Namely, a pair of pine martens, carnivores and flesh-eaters themselves, but small enough to be considered food for the bears, wolves and gluttons of the forest and field. They're on a journey to seek sanctuary with the rabbits, squirrels and other prey that have gathered to Oren--but they don't know if welcome or condemnation will meet them.

Also that is so very true and what the world needs now more than ever. Is all of us working to build something better we may not get to see but for others to enjoy it in our place. "Building for a better tomorrow" as they call it.
Kind of makes me wish I could be there and could help build for others. But alas can't even do that in the world I live in now as it always blows up in my face and makes things worse.

True. But remember the wolves about 150 pages ago? They were no bigger than Rask.
There doesn't seem to be much variation in the size of sapient species - almost all look "about human sized".
Perhaps those two are just exceptional individuals and other badgers and porcupines are smaller.

Wolves are larger than Rask-- he's about half their size.

The animals in the comic aren't "to scale" with their real world counterparts, but there's definitely disparity between species. (For what it's worth, North American porcupines are pretty chunky--second largest NA rodent after beavers--they can get to nearly 40 lbs! Martens get to >5lbs for comparison.)
I sort of class the animals like DnD monsters or something in my mind -- Bison/Bears are huge, wolves are large, martens/hares medium, etc.
