Stereolab, aside from being great, have so many influeces that I also love.
Their titles are also often tributes to great things, like "The Free Design" which was a rather amazing easy listening/vocal pop/jazz group. I learned of them from their song "Kites Are Fun" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvyt0PwMX_g which my GF remembered from when she was a little kid and I subsequently found. They've got tons of other great songs, and even did an album in 2001 that was quite good.
"Brakhage" refers to the brilliant and revolutionary filmmaker Stan Brakhage, who pushed the boundaries of film by painting directly on film or gluing things to it, like with his amazing piece "Mothlight" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfBdTsljCXk among other things. He taught in Boulder Colorado for a while, and I learned of him because some people who I met through a friend who had moved to San Francisco from there who I did music with did some soundtrack work for him when they were at school there.

That's really cool! I knew of The Free Design from one of Jazzanova's (one of my favorite artists) remixes of their song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMC3Bxzra6g My note here on them says "jazzanova lullaby remix, investigate (influenced stereolab)" rofl. Time to investigate.
