Quiet and reserved but possessing a subtle, magnetic charisma, Grail Ortega is a highly creative artisan whose kind and gentle demeanor outwardly enhances an innately supportive and selfless personality partly shrouded in a mysterious charm.
Grail Ortega was born in New York City to an accredited Paraguayan-American archaeologist and Dr. Julia Ortega, a preeminent Argentine biochemist for Native Altars, an American corporation specializing in defense and the development of advanced technologies. The maned wolf was born with Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder which affects the body's connective tissue. This disorder not only gave the young boy a tall, rail-thin physique, but it was also the source of many health problems surrounding his heart and assorted blood vessels. Dr. Ortega sought to employ a series of experimental treatments to combat the disorder but to no avail. Although a scar across his chest stands proof of these grave health concerns, Grail's life experience was one of relative normalcy in New York’s bustling, cosmopolitan milieu. However, one fateful evening, this normal life came to a sudden and unexpected end.
On an ordinary day no different from any other, Grail and his family seemed to vanish without a trace while visiting a family friend. It only took a couple days before a neighbor realized, the Ortega family hadn’t yet returned home to their scenic, Murray Hill brownstone nor did they seek to reach out and inform any loved ones of their current situation. It was by pure coincidence that a sheriff's deputy discovered the eight year-old boy trespassing on the property of an abandoned mansion several miles outside the New York metropolitan area in Ossining. His parents’ vehicle was later found parked, intact yet forsaken, near the entrance of the palatial compound. Not only did Grail have no memory of how he got there, but the maned wolf also had no memory of what happened to either his mother or father. Reemerging unharmed deep within a secluded, wooded area far from home, Grail’s rescue posed more questions than answers for those who wished to scrutinize him.
Shortly thereafter, the young boy was conveyed to a Native Altars research facility in New York City. Upon arriving, government scientists discovered that, in the days which led up to his recovery, Grail had acquired a unique set of skills. The maned wolf now had the ability to shape, create and manipulate sound waves. In short, Grail was now inexplicably gifted with a heightened degree of acoustokinesis, and only one person had any sort of clue as to how it may have manifested. This person was one Cassandra Cassini, an entrancing red-haired canine with an otherworldly aura who used her sway within Native Alters to effortlessly arrange his release into her care in New York’s Upper West Side. Unfortunately, these gifts he gained came at a high cost. In the months that followed, Grail found it exceedingly difficult to effectively manage this newfound power set and all the while cope with the sudden upheaval of his entire life.
Grail’s unique powers left him unable to speak without inadvertently damaging infrastructure in a particular radius. To bypass this drawback, Miss Cassini chose to train him on how to best restrict this immense power through meditation and, by that same token, teach the maned wolf American Sign Language to communicate in lieu of speaking. At the age of ten, Miss Cassini sent the boy, at the behest of Native Altars, to live with one of his mother’s associates, the Kinard family, in Greenwich Village. Today, at eighteen, Grail Ortega is studying under scholarship at New York University; but given the gifts he possesses, Grail is often tasked to do more than maintain good grades. As a special agent for the United States government, the maned wolf must use his remarkable skills on occasion to aid the Department of Homeland Security in their effort to secure American soil from the threat of supernatural scourges.
One day, Grail Ortega hopes to learn what became of both his parents, and whether those experimental treatments he received played a role in the powers he’s since acquired.
I want to use this opportunity to thank the always impressive
fcsimba for all the hard work and effort they put into this sheet! They apply so much of their talent into each of them, and I can't thank them enough for all the love they lavish onto my characters. I very much appreciate
fcsimba for bringing Grail's likeness to life! I had a lot of fun conceptualizing him, and for them to make such good work of everything I submitted is absolutely thrilling!
