Eastern State Penitentiary was designed to inspire penance(The origin of the word Penitentiary). In fact the halls were designed to resemble that of a church, and the rooms based on those of monks at monasteries. Certainly it was one of the most beautiful prisons in its day. And even now many parts of it it are quite inspiring.
