It's not quite a pre-Vatican II altar, although it looks like they only made a few modifications. And the altar rails were still up in front of the side altars. Just not before the main altar.

I don't know of any churches in my area that still have them. But I agree, very beautiful. They really emphasized the sacred nature of the altar area.
