CHAPTER 1 REMEMBRANCE
After leaving the university lecture hall, Esteban decided to go home. Strangely, he was not in the mood to tour the city with his classmates, as he usually did. It was already a tradition that at the end of the academic week, the human, along with a group of close friends from Dewclaw, toured Amistad. Seeing the Historical Museum, the Capitol, or attending a chakker game were the usual activities. Most of the postgraduate students were foreigners eager to know the wonders of the capital of Chakona.
“You’ll miss it, Esteban. This time, we will go to the Capitol,” said Chakat Lorna gracefully as shi grouped hirself next to Jhonny—another human in the class—and Vera, a feline morph and resident engineer from New New York.
“Alright, guys. You go,” said Esteban as he gathered up his things.
“Hmmm, when is the tournament resuming?” Jhonny asked enthusiastically.
“In a couple of days. And don't think I'll introduce you to Natany that easily,” Esteban replied reluctantly.
“Hey, calm down. I won't do anything to that cute hairball.”
“Ha ha ha...she will crush you, Jhonny, before you try something. I have already told you that she is not interested in humans,” Esteban replied.
“It's okay, it's okay. I am satisfied with seeing her fight in the tournament.” Jhonny said in a hurry.
“You miss Lilethe, right?” Lorna interrupted suddenly, touching Esteban's shoulder. The latter, sighing, replied, “Well I do not know. I guess so. I think I was too early. Perhaps hy is not ready yet for a new relationship after hys break with hys clan. And less with someone like me, who is not hys species.”
“Nonsense, Esteban. You like hym. I could see it in hys eyes when you introduced hym to us. Have a little patience. You'll see that everything will be fine,” shi reassured.
“Thank you Lorna,” Esteban replied with a smile.
“Well guys, I better go. Enjoy your visit to the Capitol. See you later,” added the human, saying goodbye to his companions and then heading to the subway station.
*
“Regt! Are you there?” Sorah asked, a little worried while looking out into the garden.
“Yes. I'm done watering the plants. What happened, dear?”
“It's Esteban. I've noticed he’s a bit sad these days. He worries me.”
“Easy Sorah. The boy has had strong experiences these last weeks—an interplanetary journey from Earth, the death of his skunktaur friend. Furthermore, he was on the verge of losing his studies at Dewclaw. I think you have to give him time to adjust to life in Chakona,” Regt said in a carefree tone.
“Maybe you're right, but I can't help but think that there is something else that disturbs him. Maybe that new friendship with that nurse skunktaur. Sometimes those creatures scare me, they can affect your mind and stuff.”
“Grrr...haha. Calm down woman! Our Renzar heads are harder for them to penetrate.”
“Hmmm...oh yeah? And what did you tell me that time in the tournament, when Esteban gave you the diadem, Regt?” Sorah countered, crossing her arms.
“Ehhh...well, I was distracted and...”
“Grrr..anyway I'm concerned about Esteban's well-being,” added the female.
The Chakonan sun, once again, was hiding behind the horizon. The temperature was beginning to drop, as the colder season was near. For furry creatures, like chakats and Renzar, it was still an ideal climate not to wear clothes over their fur, as in the summer heat, that was unbearable at times.
“What do you have there?” Sorah suddenly asked her husband, seeing a bottle filled with a liquid on the floor.
“The weekend starts today, Sorah. I want to relax a little. That's all.”
“Ay Regt ... It's okay. But don't be silly” said the female a bit dazed.
“Why don't you stay and have a drink, darling?”
“Grrr...no Regthar! I don't want to lose my head like other times. Now we do not live alone. Esteban is with us and we need to leave the past behind!” Sorah declared with conviction, as she headed back inside the house.
“Don't worry about the boy. I'll wait for him here,” replied the male, as he sat down on the garden floor, ready to pour himself another bit of his favorite liquor.
*
As he watched the buildings and houses pass through the train window, Esteban had a strange sensation. He began to panic suddenly, for no reason. This had never happened to him before. He stood up and walked into the next car. He felt like he was short of breath. Fortunately, the destination station was next. He waited, grasping a stanchion, until the train stopped. As the platform doors opened, he came out quickly, and with one hand on his chest he leaned against an adjoining wall. Some chakats looked at him with concern, but Esteban indicated that he was fine. After a few moments, he regained his composure.
“What the hell is wrong with me?” he asked himself with concern. "Maybe I need to visit a doctor soon," he concluded, concerned as he left the station. After walking the few blocks that separated him from Regt's home, he finally arrived.
“Heeelllo son. You finally arrived!” the Renzar exclaimed when he saw him at the garden gate.
“Regt! Hello. What are you doing here?” asked the intrigued human.
“Grrr...nothing important, just taking care of the plants in the garden, and drinking some Grom liquor. Your mother is—sorry—I mean, Sorah, she's very worried about you.” Regt replied cheerfully. It seemed to Esteban that his friend was a bit drunk, so he tried to walk past without disturbing him.
“Ok Regt. I'm going to go in now, with your permission,” Esteban said, somewhat nervous.
“Wait son. Stay with your father to chat for a while” said the Renzar who was suddenly holding his arm “I'm not that skunk friend of yours, but I can also be your confidant.” Regt added with his face flushed from the liquor. Esteban did not like the last comment; although he was surprised that the big man called himself “his father,” so naturally. That made him smile.
“Okay, big man. You win. I'll go say hi to Sorah and bring something to eat for both of us. It is not good to drink on an empty stomach,” added the boy, before entering the house.
“Good puppy! I'm glad you're back!” Regt replied with a smile.
After going to the bathroom and then going through the kitchen, Esteban found Sorah preparing dinner.
“Hello. I'm back.”
“Esteban! What a joy, son!” she responded with a hug. “How have you been?”
“Why are you asking, Sorah?”
“I have noticed you’re sad, son. Something happened? How are you with your new skunktaur friend?
“Lilethe? Ah...well...the truth, Sorah...is that I haven't heard from hym for three days. And it is strange because—since we met—we were in contact daily, either by video calls or by simple text message. We are constantly aware of each other.”
“And now? What happened? Has hy already stopped being your friend?” She asked, intrigued.
“I honestly don't know. I'm a little worried about hym. Maybe something happened to hym. I was trying to locate hym, calling the hospital in Berdoovia where hy works, but they didn't know how to give me an answer either.”
“I understand now. I knew something was happening to you Esteban.” Sorah responded, as she hugged him again. “My mother's intuition has never failed me,” she clarified.
“Oh Sorah. You and Regt are so good to me. I will never be able to pay you back for what you do for me,” said the human emotionally.
“No, my little one. Do not say that. It is enough for us to know that you are happy with us. We love you. And we wish the best for you," she replied, hugging him while she tenderly licked his face. Then she added, “Dinner is ready, if you want to eat now.”
“Thanks Sorah. But I told Regt I'd keep him company.”
“Ah...forgive him. I didn't think you would see him like this so soon. Sometimes he tends to drink a little more than he should.”
“It's because of what happened on Grom, right?”
“Yeah. It's...it's his way of dealing with pain. I suppose that each one does it in their own way,” said the female with her head down.
“Easy mommy bear. It's natural. You will see that everything will go better. On Earth, we men like to drink from time to time. It is even almost a tradition. The question is, do we do it for the right reasons?” Esteban replied as he gently caressed the female's hands.
“I'll go with him. I think we need a talk about...well...father and son? Heh heh...”
“Oh Esteban. I'm so glad you're with us! Thanks for your words. I'm also sure that things will work out between you and Lilethe. You're a good person.”
“No, Sorah. You are by letting me stay here.”
“Okay, go with Regt. Bring him dinner. Don't drink too much. And bundle up, because the night will be cold.”
“Whatever you say, Mom,” Esteban answered with a smile.
Little by little, the boy began to get used to his new reality, and to fully understand what Vroeg had told him. Give a new chance to his parents—embodied in the figures of Regthar and Sorah—and give himself a new chance, forgiving the suffering of the past.
Esteban went out into the garden with a huge platter of food for both of them. Regthar continued to sit on the ground staring silently ahead. The boy thought the Renzar had fallen asleep.
“Regt? You're good?”
“Grrr...ah...? Oh yes, little one. Come sit next to me. I see that Sorah exaggerated a bit with the dinner heh heh heh,” The furry man replied when he observed the large food source.
“What's up Esteban? My wife is worried about you. I told him that it must be stress from everything you've been through. But now that we are alone, you can confidently tell me. I'm sure it's a new love, isn't it?” Regt said, smiling. Esteban was surprised. He had never seen his friend speak like that; he could tell that he was somewhat drunk. Esteban found it funny how sometimes he got confused when he spoke.
“I think you hit the nail on the head, Regt. I'm worried about Lilethe.”
“Grrr...ha ha. I knew it!” exclaimed the Renzar as he put his arm heavily on Esteban's shoulders, pulling him in order to do so.
“And what happened? That skunktaur didn't reciprocate?”
“Eh? It's not that. We are not even paired. We are just friends,” the human rushed to answer.
“Oh and you like hym, right?”
“Eh?”
“Come on kid. Be honest with me. I can give you very good advice on that. I was with chakats before I met Sorah, of course. I know how they love and...”
“Hey! Wait Regt, that's not it...” Esteban exclaimed angrily, “A skunktaur is not the same as a chakat!”
“Oh. It's true,” said the Renzar. “Let's see. Oh yeah. Skunktaurs have phases. And tell me, do you like it masculine or feminine? Because I could help you with hys masculine side, so you can...”
“Regt! I already told you it's not that! And I like females, so you know!” The human exclaimed somewhat annoyed.
“Oh... I'm sorry son. Then maybe, Sorah and I could teach you how to make love Renzar style. Your skunktaur will love it.”
“What are you talking about Regt. No no no... Believe me it's not necessary. I also know... I know how to do it. I am not a child.”
“Wow, that's true. What...what happens is that...ufff...sometimes I get carried away and when I see you...I...I imagine that I'm still with him, teaching him things,” finished the Renzar lowering his gaze, while he remembered their deceased child on Grom.
“Okay, easy Regt. It's okay. I like that you treat me like a son. I consider you as my dad too,” Esteban said as he caressed Regt's hand.
“Little boy, I...if only I hadn't taken you with me to work that day. If only you had stayed home with Mom, like always. But you were so eager to learn. You were so happy to join me...” Regt said, staring into space, as he rebuilt that tragic day on Grom, four years ago. Liquor and sadness seized him, like so many other times, making him shed warm tears on his hairy face. Esteban, moved, stood in front of him and hugged him tightly. They were like this for a long time; the cry of the Renzar was contagious. Esteban, impressed by the way a creature as big and strong as Regt succumbed to pain, made him cry too.
“Pain is inevitable son, but suffering is an option,” Vroeg had reminded him in one of the many sunsets that they both shared.
The night grew worse and the cold was felt more strongly. Esteban snuggled up next to Regt, leaning his back against the Renzar’s belly. The Renzar received him with his arms, resting his jaw on the human’s hair. Now the boy felt how the tears of his friend were running down his hair.
“Regt. Everything will be fine. It wasn't your fault. Not anyone's. I'm sure your son, while he was with you, was very happy. Because you and Sorah are wonderful parents. I know. Because I—I can see mine in you. And I am immensely happy, as I remember I was during my first years of life. My dad and my mom have returned.” Esteban replied from the heart.
“Esteban...” Regthar sighed deeply, then closed his eyes. They both stayed like this for an instant. Then the Renzar, after wiping his face, stood up. And with a great roar he exclaimed, “Grrrr.... It has been sad enough for today. Son, I want us to drink to you, and to our family!”
“That's the attitude, friend!” exclaimed the human, who also stood up, picked up a glass of liquor and began to drink.
“Esteban. No...don't worry about your skunktaur friend. Tomorrow we will solve that. Now, I don't want any more sadness or worry. I want you and me to enjoy this evening together. We'll eat Sorah's dinner and then we'll drink some more Grom liquor, ha ha ha!”
“Yes! As you say!” the human replied, laughing.
After taking a large sip, Regt suddenly brought his face close to Esteban's, and putting a hand on his shoulder, he asked, “Would you like to be my son?”
“And you, would you like to be my father, Regt?” Replied the boy, to which the Renzar reacted by lifting him with his arms and turning on himself. But he was so dizzy that he lost his balance, falling backwards, with Esteban on top of him. Neither of them stopped laughing.
Sorah, who had seen the scene from the window, couldn't help the excitement, and tears of happiness trickled down her cheeks. She—in her heart—also felt the need to have someone like Esteban in her family.
Late at night, Sorah was surprised that Regthar and Esteban had not entered the house yet. She went out into the garden to look for them, and found them sleeping in the doorway. Regt was lying on his back and Esteban was sleeping peacefully on his belly.
“Grrr...I knew they would get drunk. But they both look so cute...” Sorah thought, while she contemplated them. "However, it's very cold here." Quickly, she grabbed Esteban and carried him in her arms to her room. Then she went in search of Regt who—while half asleep—stood up, leaning on her.
“Sorah...do...where's Esteban?” he asked, disoriented.
“I left him in his room sleeping. Regthar, is it true that you want to adopt him?” the female asked emotionally.
“Yes my love. So...only if you want it too,” he stammered.
“It's what I long for the most. I know he is no longer a child, but I want him to be with us. Thank you love,” said Sorah, and then she took the head of her husband and give him a deep and prolonged kiss on hid lips. Their love for each other was strong, despite the pain of the loss of their only son while they still lived on the planet Grom. That night, the couple smiled again after a long time, and joy lit the fire in their hearts. Passion and love were once again intense between the two of them.
