After Korina gave me his number, I called up Roger. I told him to meet at the junk yard with his food truck, and I'd run the plan by him. He agreed, but he wanted to get some more answers out of me while there. I Simply said yes to that and hung up.
"You're gonna arm his truck aren't you?" Korina said, "Stashed anything in there?"
"Maybe," I smirked, "I actually wanna fortify that truck of his rather than arm it. Not only does it give him an alibi for why he was at where it all goes down, but it's great cover for him and anyone else near by when things go sideways."
Korina looked at me puzzled, "How are you going to fortify it then?"
"Come find out, tomorrow." I said with a smile, "If you can keep up."
The next morning, she woke up before I did, already had breakfast and everything.
"Looks like I'm gonna find out," She said with a smirk, and it turned more to a smile after she sipped her tea, "Come have some eggs, hon."
After breakfast, we drove toward town; leaving a note to tell the kids they were staying home today. Once we saw it, we started driving along the outskirts, looking for the junk yard. We parked outside, and then hopped the fence.
"So... How are you doing this then?" Korina asked me again, "How are you going to modify his truck?
"With some armor." I said, and walked around the junk piles, "Something flexible, but sturdy. Maybe old tires."
"What?" Korina followed "You're not seriously putting that on his truck are you?"
"I'm gonna find a way to put it inside." I said, "I'll work with him to fit it all in." then I looked to the black truck with red hot words on the side, "Speaking of which."
The truck drove in and stopped beside us, and Jerry rolled the window down. He looked at me and the tire I was holding. "So you're gonna put tires on my truck to slow the bullets?"
I gave him a nod
"Give me a moment," And Jerry turned his truck off. "We're gonna need to cut those up."
Korina looked at him with her jaw dropped, and then looked to me.
"It's a common thing in the millitary." I told her, "Okay, not common, but it's been done more than once."
The two and I then divided up work making Jerry's truck a small bunker. Korina would cut the tires and scrap up while I would grab and haul it all over to her, and then Jerry would take the pieces from Korina into his truck. During our work, Jerry would pop his head out the window of his food truck to talk to me.
"Hey, you're ex-military, right?" Jerry asked, "I mean, you seem to know a lot of stuff, weapons, defense, and even some tactics."
"Takes one to know one." I smiled to him, "Ranger right?"
"Marine, actually." Jerry said, "I retired after my last tour, wanted to settle down and live how I wanted."
When we crossed again, he had another question, "What branch were you from?"
"It's classified, I swore to my country not to say." I told him, "You know how it is."
He just nodded and got back to work.
Then he had another question, "Did you ever see some unnamed soldiers?" Worked with one another, suppose to protect us?"
It paused for a moment at that, and looked to him. "I... I heard of them, "I don't think I knew them, personally."
"Same here, they kept to themselves." I said, I wonder what happened to them."
I stayed silent at that, and kept working.
"Something wrong?" Korina asked, but I didn't answer. When I started to walk away, she took my hand, "Watch..."
"Let's keep focus on what's happening now." I said, and then walked away.
For just the three of us, we managed to fill the inside of Jerry's truck with stuff to absorb shots better, and the truck could still move once we were done.
After that, I just had one thing to do, and our trap was set.
