Coffee.
Zaryn walked to the kitchen, hoping a cup of coffee would get her out of this feeling she's having. She normally was a little groggy some mornings, but this morning, there was something she couldn't put her finger on.
She didn't understand why she felt like this, it was like any other autumn morning, yet she felt a little... off...
"Maybe I'm catching a cold." she thinks, as she turns on the coffee maker. The sudden temperature changes do do that sometimes, but no, that wasn't it.
This felt different.
It wasn't a bad feeling, but it was different enough that it definitely wasn't normal. Maybe she was just imagining it, spent a bit too long out in the garden yesterday and just over exerted herself.
"That's probably it." as she can't help but feel a small crick as she rubs the back of her neck. Looking down, tending to those plants for too long might cause a little muscle strain.
*Beep*
She snaps out of her thoughts to hear the coffee machine finish brewing. She pours herself a cup, adds some cream and sugar, and takes it into the living room so she can enjoy it while watching some of the morning news.
After sitting down on the couch, she can't help but still feel that crick in her neck. Was the muscle strained or knotted, or was there something else wrong? She puts down her coffee and reaches for her neck again. She starts rubbing, hoping that she'll find some tough muscle or something causeing this problem, but still nothing.
"I need to schedule a massage." she mumbles to herself while pushing harder on her neck, trying to find what is giving her this bothersome feeling.
*Pop*
For a brief moment, she thinks she popped the joint causing this problem, but then she feels like she's falling. She knows she is still sitting up, but her equilibrium and vision start spinning. Not knowing what to think at this moment, she clutches the armrest of the couch, and closes her eyes tightly, as if bracing for impact.
Black.
She opens her eyes to see blackness. Her mind races to think of what just happened. Was it an earthquake or did the house sudddenly colapse? She then realizes two things, that she still feels herself sitting up, clutching the couch, and that she feels fabric on her face, like that of the blanket she left on the couch...
She calms down, but that panic is soon replaced by confusion of what just happened.
Perhaps Drayk just threw a blanket over her head to mess with her... yeah that sounds about right...
She reaches up to pull the blanket off, but she doesn't feel a blanket... in fact she doesn't feel much of anything. Her hand should have touched her face by now, but she still just feels open air. The panic is starting to set in again as she tries to touch her face, but can't help to not find anything.
But then, she does touch something, and it is a feeling she has never felt before...
She feels smooth skin on her neck... on top of her neck, as if her head had been detached from her body. No blood or muscle or bone, just smooth skin.
While a million more thougts of panic and confusion race through her head, she manages to put together that, if her head is detached, then it should be nearby.
She slides her hand across the cusion, quickly feeling a blanket, as well as feeling her head get bumped by something. She reaches into the blanket feeling her hands touching her head, and that very strange smoothness where her neck would have attached.
She picks up her head, which proves to be surprisingly heavy, and she blinks as her eyes adjust to the sudden brightness of the room after being face down in that blanket for what felt like an eternity.
She turns her head around to look at her body, and she sees that everything seems normal, except the lack of head on her neck.
She brings her head in closer to look at her neck stump, and there didn't appear to be any stitches or whatever, it was as if her head was never attached to her body.
Remembering that decorative mirror on the wall of the living room, she stands up to take a look at herself. She is quite surprised when she finds no balance or coordination issues with her body, despite no longer having a head attached.
Looking in the mirror, she sees her body holding her detached head, like some strange dream creature, but instead of some creature, it was... herself.
She thinks to herself that it must be a dream, this has to be a dream, there is no way that this is real... but after looking around and waiting, there doesn't appear to be anything else dream-like happening. She pinches herself, and it definitely hurt.
She tries placing her head back on her neck. It balances there for a second, Zaryn thinking that it might have re-attached, before sliding off a second later.
She catches her head with her tail just before it manages to hit the floor. SHe takes a breath, thinking that was too close, before going into deep thought about what she should do.
Just as this reality is setting in, she hears something from a distant room.
"Momma Zaryn!"
Crap... crap, crap, crap, Drayk woke up. He's gonna see his pseudo-decapitated Mak'tah. She was thinking of what to do when Drayk slid into the room.
"Could we make pancakes for breakfast?" Drayk says, as he is greeted with the sight of Zaryn holding her detached head, a look of shock and horror on her face as she looked at Drayk.
It felt like an eternity of them staring at each other before someone said something.
"Wha-what happened to you?" Drayk said in a stunned voice.
Zaryn felt sick to her stomach, thinking this would scar the poor shurian for some time to come.
"I... I don't know, I was going to have my coffe-" Before Zaryn was suddenly interrupted by Drayk snatching her head from her hands.
"This is so cool!" Drayk said with a big smile, holding up Zaryn's head.
Zaryn was relieved that she hadn't traumatized Drayk, but now she couldn't help but be a little worried by this sudden enthusiasm.
"How did you do it? Did it hurt? Can you put your head back on? Were you always able to do this?" Drayk said, rattling off questions at a pace even Zaryn was a bit shocked at.
"D-Drayk, easy does it." Zaryn said, feeling a little dizzy from how Drayk was moving her head around. "Give me back my head please."
Drayk hands her head back to her body, to which Zaryn tucks her head under one arm.
"Sorry." Drayk said, looking a little embarrassed, "It's just so cool that you can do that!"
Zaryn can't help but feel that he doesn't see the bigger issue here.
"Listen... I don't know how or why this happened, but I need to find a way to fix this... somehow." Zaryn says, thinking who could possibly help her with something like this.
"Do you know how it happened?" Drayk asks quizzically.
"I am not sure, I had this weird feeling in my neck and I might have pushed too hard on it..." Zaryn says.
Zaryn then notices a little glimmer of excitement on Drayks face, although she has no idea what he could be planning.
Drayk then reaches up and grabs the sides of his head and starts pulling upward.
"Drayk, no..." Zaryn says slightly exasperated, while watching him pulling on his head.
*Pop*
Any words Zaryn had left her body once Drayk's head left his.
"I can do it too! This is awesome!" Drayk said as he felt the skin on his neck stump.
The feeling of disbelief was quickly replaced by that of annoyance for Zaryn, knowing that she would now have to deal with Drayk's as well as her own 'condition'.
"I'm so tall now!" Drayk said, holding his head high above his body.
"Drayk..." Zaryn sighed, wanting him to take this a little more seriously.
"This is way better than the Halloween costume I had planned!" He said gleefully.
"Can you... wait, what?" Zaryn stopped herself at what he said.
"Yeah, this would be an amazing costume!" Drayk said.
Halloween...
It was Halloween...
Zaryn couldn't help but feel that this had something to do with their current predicament...
I think that all speaks for itself don't you!
Have a Happy Halloween everyone :)
