Chapter 27: Debrief
Nyx was not happy about this, not at all. First she had woken up without a leg, then the doctors had decided to schedule a psych eval for her, and to add to the fun she had actually broken down into a sobbing fit during said evaluation.
Dammit she didn’t need this, she could handle whatever she had to the damn doctors just needed to get her a prosthetic, or a damn peg, and she’d get back out there hunting down those freaks that had gotten away. She didn’t care if they were actual demons she would get them one way or another even after what they did. The pain in her leg wouldn’t stop her. She just needed to be more careful. Not let them tear into her again and she wouldn’t have to deal with the pain again. Her bones sounded shockingly like potato chips as they started to cave, only louder. And the ripping noise she later realized must have been her calf muscle tearing itself apart. The noise echoed in her ears, getting louder and louder along with the crunching, and the roars the beast made. She started to shake as her vision got blurry. She grabbed at her water bottle and clenched her fist around it blasting the contents over her face.
“Dammit” She had started freaking out again just remembering her conversation with the damn shrink, and the last thing she needed right now was to freak out again.
“Are you ok, Agent?” A voice cut in underscoring her need to remain calm, “You don’t need to be involved here, you need to rest anyway”
“NO.. Uh.. no sir” She shook herself and looked down at the face displayed on a laptop screen, along side a few others she didn’t know. Her boss was displaying a truly irritating amount of concern on his floppy canine features. She had insisted on joining a debrief. Some of the cops that were there, the surviving ones at least, had set up this meeting in a spare hospital room. Also in the room was officer Blythe, the cop she had met on scene, the space marine bomb tech who, now out of his suit, she could see was a brown furred rabbit, and a couple others she didn’t recognize.
Thankfully they all had the decency to look either scared for themselves, or focused on the job. She did not need multiple people’s pity lest she go for her gun.
Her boss hesitated before the old hound continued, “Honestly half this would seem insane if it weren’t for all the photos and body cams. Some admittedly still seems insane, and autopsy has requested IT support of all things. But before I summarize to much, anything you want to add people?”
Blythe took a breath, “The people, the zombies, do we know at all who they were?”
“Let’s avoid the term Zombie” A different face said, “We don’t need that kind of panic in my town, for IDing them. We got some yes, working on the rest of the ones you managed to take down. Some are, or were, the missing employees from Medical Mechanica, others on the other hand…”
“Chief?” Blythe prodded.
“Others have death certificates from months ago. From all over the country too.”
“And you DON’T want us to say zombie?”
“Officer”
“Dammit, I’m sorry, but I pumped enough bullets in to those crazed things to know they weren’t no normal people no more!”
Nyx cut in, “Demons…”
After a pause her boss once again spoke, “I know what they look like could certainly lead to that conclusion, but preliminary autopsies imply they are some sort of frankensteinian cyborgs. Someone BUILT them”
Blythe scoffed, “Out of their own employees? and for what?”
“We weren’t” A fox that Nyx didn’t recognize pipped up.
Nyx’s boss spoke again, “You have some insight young man? You said in the interview that you didn’t know how this happened.”
“I don’t I” The fox took a deep breath, “I know I’m the ‘civilian’ here and I work for MM …”
“Exactly” Another cop said, “You work for the freaks that are responsible for this!”
“NO THEY” The fox took a breath, “My friend got grabbed by those things and less than an hour later he was one of them, THEY were making THEMSELVES.”
“And who made the first one then?”
“That was” The fox wilted, “Probably us, but I don’t know HOW they went nuts!”
The resulting shouting match at least allowed Nyx to gather her thoughts. The fox was some sort of guard. Glancing down at the report said that his name was Sam. He wouldn’t know technical stuff just being on guard duty, but he would know a few things that might help.
Once the shouting calmed down a bit Nyx decided to ask, “So MM is a prosthetics company right? Cybernetic replacements and the like?”
Sam nodded
“Why the corpses? The ones with death certificates must have been ‘normal’ when they died, right?”
“They got like, cadavers to work on better ways to connect to the body, I think. I don’t know how it works, but … and there’s a rumor I heard.”
“Rumor”
“The boss. She, uh, she’s terminal. Some kind of genetic disease, I don’t know what. That’s not the rumor though that’s just true. The rumor is that she was trying to… geeze I don’t know, it sounds nuts”
“Lots of this is nuts, son” The screen said.
Sam took a breath again, “The rumor was that she wanted to build a new body for herself. Like not a new arm, but copying her mind over, or something, the research team would know more.”
“She do it?” Nyx asked, “The boss I mean. We haven’t found her from what I know.”
“I don’t know, uh, Us guards are contracted, so they don’t tell us much of anything, normal or otherwise, but for awhile before things got crazy there was uh… one of them, a, a NOT crazy one, just walking around the place”
“What’d it looks like?”
“White fur, metal bits on its limbs, black visor for a face. It weird me out so I didn’t talk to it or anything but others did” Sam explained, “It was only a day or so after it showed up that things exploded though.”
“So if she built a body that she could put her mind in, did they build others? others that were rejected for some reason?”
“I don’t know” Sam said
“Where are you going with this?” Blythe asked
Nyx continued, “If there were others that could hold someone’s mind, but didn’t, maybe some other part wasn’t right, then maybe the demons took over them by like, possessing the…”
“Agent Nyx…”
“the, unused bodies could have been under their control, they could have used the tech to make more, out of the employees”
“NYX” Her boss repeated louder, “Jumping to ‘demon possession’ isn’t a place we are going, are you SURE you are ok?”
“I’m fine and I saw the damn portal to, I guess to hell, right in FRONT OF ME. I don’t care what it sounds like they are demons!”
“No one else saw that, Agent”
“What?” Nyx turned to Blythe
“Sorry” He said, “I told them what I did see and they saw my camera feed, but I didn’t see this ‘demon hulk’ that attacked you, or a portal.”
“I guess you didn’t see the angel either? The one that closed the portal?”
He shook his head. The others were now having the ‘are you ok’ look crossing their faces. They thought she was being nuts. No matter how insane things were she was taking it too far for them.
“Agent Nyx” her boss said, “I appreciate your work on this, but you do need to recover…
“Sir…”
“And anyone would be traumatized after what you’ve been through.”
“Sir I’m not …”
“The appearance of these things is pretty horrifying, so getting them crossed with demons isn’t to far out there I suppose”
“They are…”
“But we are going to proceed under the assumption that we basically have a band of what amounts to Frankenstein’s monsters running loose. They were built in a lab and can be killed just fine without invoking demons and angels. So, you need to recover.”
“I can still help!”
“Not in the field you can’t, Agent” Her boss sounded more irritated now, a good sign to shut it, “The department will pay for a high end prosthetic for you, and any physical therapy you need, but please try to put the case out of your mind. Understood?”
“I… yes sir”
Nyx grumbled to herself as she puttered around the hospital a bit awkwardly on crutches. She was pissed that no one believed her about the demons, that she was off the case, and that she kept trying to but her foot down only to remember its absence. Her husband picking her up and taking her home cheered her up a little, but the case just stayed in her head. Maybe they were right, to a point. Even if she was right, the portal was closed. Maybe just finding and shooting the remainder of the freaks would be enough? but she doubted it seriously. If there were demons in those bodies then surely they’d be trying to fix being cut off from hell? She had to do something. Had to.
She knew she was missing something, but it didn’t start to crystalize until she was home trying to relax. She had had her dinner, lovely pasta dish her man had made, and was relaxing in an easy chair with her shirt pulled off so she could give the little one her dinner as well. One thing that had occurred to her, was after she had started talking about demons, not ALL of the faces in the room looked at her like she was crazy. The guard named ‘San’ hadn’t, nor had Graves, sure it was just the two of out of the crowded room, but she needed to talk to them again. The other point of interest was the girl. The angel had saved someone, but they didn’t seem like an angel or anything themselves. A girl with spotted grey fur, a green skirt, fishnet stockings, and a backpack. Not a lot to go on, but maybe she’d be able to help too.
Now how the heck to find them without knowing ANY of their numbers, or the girl’s name. She couldn’t call the cops for help she’d just be told to stay benched. She gently shifted her daughter to the other tap, already brainstorming her next move.
