"Lanóvran zan-Faervan is what his people call a "Songkeeper." While he is still rather young for this role, he possesses a natural talent for it which has earned him the respect of his peers. It is his responsibility to preserve and perform the songs of his clan. "Song" is a word used often by the coyophians, to refer to history, culture, art, and lifeways; and as such, a Songkeeper plays a significant role in education and leadership. He/she is akin to a teacher or guardian of knowledge, and must often journey alone into the desert to practice and honor this duty. Time alone in the wild helps a Songkeeper to concentrate and to refine their techniques.
Lanóvran is Songkeeper of the Black Feather moiety, Atroxan Clan. The Black Feather are warriors, seekers of truth, guardians of nature and of their people. The opposite moiety is the White Claw. The White Claw are artisans and scholars, healers, and the keepers of history and culture. There is often some overlap, but these are the traditional distinctions. Music, meanwhile, as well as the operations of day-to-day survival (hunting, building, etc.) are duties shared amongst the entire clan. When the clan gathers to share their songs, it can be a powerful yet eerie experience for any outsider to hear the strains of instruments and the strange, howling voices echoing across the desert.
The Black Feather especially revere the spirit of the ancient dragon as both guide and, in a way, ancestor. This is connected, therefore, to the most significant of knowledge which Lanóvran is tasked to protect and impart. During his ritual time alone in the canyon, Lanóvran plays on his flute the Guardian Song, conjuring in his mind and spirit an image of the ancient one, whom he asks through his music to watch over the land and to provide guidance to the clans. He does this at sunset, a meaningful time for all coyophians; and he plays with extra fervor, for he has been fortunate enough to encounter a sacred white rattlesnake along the path. This serpent has special meaning to the Atroxan, and serves as an omen of a promising future.

A little midnight snack, the long overdue commission for
lanovran. He waited way too long for me to finish this painting. I hope I could make it up by resizing it and giving it a proper background and such. This turned out totally different than originally planned but I'm happier with this version.
I wanted to put a native american mandala into the background but erased the first two circles and let it stand like that. There is too much going on already. x)
I hope you like it! <3

Incredible and wonderful. I was hoping to learn some story behind this image when I saw it, and was very glad that you provided some of that story. I admire this in particular because even though it's about one individual character (on some level, perhaps, the person behind him as well), this piece can speak to everyone who sees it.
