Subject: Candle holders for the chapter on you guessed it candle holders ..
Materia Artistica: Koh-i-noor tech pens
Reffernces: several of these i own/owned and the larger dish with the pricket and curly legs and the glass votive with the iron stand were from a candle catalouge
Notes: From a book project from C.R.O.C. press (and no i am not making this shit up. i once confronted him on the usage of croc as a anagram and he said it was his initials and that was that.... ) Candle holders much like the candles themselves have a long illustirious history.
a fun fact is the little point you see on many candle holders is called the pricket and is of course to make sure the candle does not fall off or get bumped off. this little invention saved many a manor or church form fire more often. Candle holders were oft made from very fine materials because back in the days of medieval europe candles were scarce with the populace using tallow candles (made from animal fat and yes i know how to make it. smells delicious looks horrific) but the rest of europe used beeswax or beeswax/tallow as parafin is a later invention that came from oil refining. other period waxes included stuff boilded form plant matter such as cinnamon bark and heavily waxy leaves of certain plants. as such all the non tallow waxes were labor intensive and expensive. in fact beeswax like crocus bulbs and a few other interesting things could be used to pay local taxes to not only the lord of the area but the church as well. larger chandler guilds would cast huge statues of thier heads of guild to give to the church. So with the expense of the waxes it was only appropriate that one would burn such luxeries in only the best materials and artistic efforts. Of coure the tallow of the common people was usually burned in common clay bowls or such. Of course much like so many things that were once only the province of the rich and privielged like glass ornaments and salt and aluminum and such you can now get it at dollar stores and such everywhere and cheaply. and now the expensive candles are the ones made from clarified tallow. :) interesting how that works eh?
