You have to compare this Evon to the Evon from the early chapters of the web comic. It has been some masterful character growth over that time :)

So IIRC wasn't this based on the standard in your world/universe that in the case of mixed species romance the child will be the species of the parent of the same gender? For Example Evon (bear) and Herodotus (rat) have two children a daughter (bear) and a son (rat).
So in Tristan's case he's wondering why he was born bear like his mother when he would normally be rabbit like his father? (though he does have his father's fur/hair color).

That is correct. However, there is a little known fact (I've mentioned it a couple of times) that just some times a child is the other way around. A boy that resembles his mother's species (Tristan is an example of that) or a daughter that looks like her father's species. It is about as common as paternal twins in humans. Why it happens is not well understood.
