hey gang, guess who I met last month? C'mon, guess guess guess! :)
While most may think."Hey, that's cool!" it was a bittersweet day. Ready for some storytime?
Went to Fan Expo in Toronto with 2 friends (who will remain nameless unless they wish otherwise) Gonna spin it short, no embellishment, just the facts.
Walk from place we're staying to subway, get off subway and walk into Main train station, walk through there and onto the skywalk. Walk, walk, walk until we get to building that Fan Expo is *usually* in...but not this time. Continue walking around the *rest* of the building until we meet up with the massive lineup. They mention that they have reserve tickets and we have to go DOWN THE BLOCK to get into line for day passes. Walk walk walk, and wait in line to get in. (remember this is a convention center, walked around it almost twice)
(walked past the actor that played Chewbacca, with his lightsaber cane of pimpness)
Get in building, wait about an hour for lines to diminish. get ticket. Stan's signing autographs right now, rush through crowd to get in line. Oh, the line's a little longer than expect-holy, it wraps halfway around the building. We get in line. I'm doing this, i came all this way, i'll wait. then short guy with staff t-shirt gets in front of us, claims that the line stops *here* for the morning session. Come back later at 2 pm (it's about 1130 am by now) Staff comes by and says we can buy tickets for a photo op at 2 pm, i pick one up ($40)
He walked past me once in the crowd, guided by mooks, saw him at his table again close to 2pm, as we approached to wait in line, he's hurried out a side door and disappears. Bleah. :P
Okay fine, walk around enjoy convention, get some WOW art from the artist alley and see/chat with some famous artists (DC, Marvel) 2pm rolls around, we go downstairs to do the photo op. a sign on the door says it's *cancelled* until the very end of the convention (7pm). Fine, let's go back upstairs. it takes up 40 minutes to do it because they only let a few people up at a time. We finally get up and grab a snack. by this time we're down to 2 people. We find out it was a good thing we didn't try to get outside (and wait in line again) because the fire marshal tells staff that if anyone leaves, close the door behind them because there are too many people in the convention area already.
so we gotta blow the rest of the time in the con, no cheap food (or even water fountains) for us. :P get some art and chat some more.
630pm rolls around, let's go and wait in line for photo op. we see the room, the line, go to wait-holy, it wraps halfway around the building again, on both sides of the hall. Came this far, gonna wait. Chat with fellow fans in line, show each other some art and blab until Stan shows up. (in the meantime, a little dumpling of a staff woman is barking orders through a megaphone, threatening to bite us all, her and the building security screw the lines up royal as they figure the mess out. we finally move.
745pm I arrive at the room, the Stan room. gonna meet one of (my) most influential persons in recent history. I get into the room, see the camera crew and general mooks(guards), I pull the picture out (on right, I should note I worked 2 days on it (11x17) and didn't get a scan, just a photo of it, it was in a nice frame as well)
So i see Stan, hes sitting like in the photo, So i pull the picture out, about to pass it to him and shake his hand...*NOO!!* all of a sudden the camera guy and general mook pulls the frame out of my hand and places it against the wall, instantly directing me to stand next to Stan and *don't touch him*, pose, smile, *flash* done, get out. All i could do is turn to Stan, sorta weakly point at the picture, laying next to the 2 other 'gifts' people left him and say. "Uhm...enjoy?"
4. fucking. seconds. All that waiting, the time spent on the picture. Done in 4 seconds. Didn't even get to say hi. I walked out so totally depressed and I talked to the fans I was talking with in line, they were pretty beat down too. No one blames Stan, of course, just that feeling you get when you feel beaten. But the story is not over.
coming back to the Stan room door, i wanted to ask about my picture. the ladies were at least kind enough to answer my questions. but when i asked if Stan will see these gifts or if they just throw them out after the photoshoot, she got a pained look on her face and weakly said "I don't know." *You don't KNOW?! I spent 2 days on it and you don't know.* by the time I finished questioning the ladies, the line was about done , so i decided to wait, maybe I can get a 'hello' in as he passes by, never know.
So Stan finally starts walking out with the mooks. All i could do as he approached was say"I just wanted to thank you for coming." He looks at me, pats me on the back twice, nods and smiles. Saying nothing, he's guided off by the guards into the crowd.
Despite all the waiting, the disappointment, the inability to present my gift or even talk to him. That one thing made it all better...
...well, not *ALL* better, I still would like to know the fate of my picture. I'd like to have heard Stan say something about it, good or bad. I was just tired enough I didn't feel like going back to retrieve it or anything. that was it, i met him. (sorta) time to go home.
So that's pretty much it, there and back. I've never really drawn Spiderman before so don't judge too harshly, got some practice with the color brushpens and got me some art of my wow girls and got to meet an icon. not too bad a way to spend a Saturday. :)

ow...Man, I'd feel like shit >< I mean, I'd love to stand more than ten feet away from him and I'm sure I'd just faint. But going through all that...man, one stan fan to another, I'm sorry ::hugs::the least he could've said was hi...I mean....just one second word..hi, I gave a voice actor something he'd like and he went ecstatic about it.
It's still wonderful that you got teh chance to get a photo with Stan "the man" Lee. Congrats on getting there, sorry to hear about how it all went down but considering Stan's rep I can understand a bit of what went on. Still it's great that he showed his appreciation for you going there man. I bet he enjoyed it all the same, every artist out there will enjoy the gift art they receive from fans.
On an art note: your spiderman drawing is wonderful. the color highlights really bring out the Web Slinger.

*pets* at least you got to meet him. I went to a comic convention a few years ago where they had Don Rosa, one of the best artists when it came to the stories with Scrooge McDuck and stuff? I hoped to meet him and bought a ticket, and then it turned out I had gotten a wrong ticket. Red tickets meant you could go see him on the saturday, while blue ones like the one I had gotten was for sundays. And I had to work sunday. Needless to say, I was quite upset and disappointed because I had waited for hours already to get inside the damn room itself =/
YOU BASTARD! YOU DEAR WEAR A SUPERMAN SHIRT AROUND THE GREAT ONE!? >:(
Go wash yourself... you stink of SHAAAME!
xD haha, just kidding. :D That is frickin' awesome! ^_^ You got to meet one of the legendary comic-makers! :D That's like... I dunno... seeing a unicorn or something in today's standards! X3

that is awesome man. I really wish that the mooks wouldn't have been such pricks x.x I really can feel ya on going to see one of your many inspirations and trying to make a gift for him. I am sure that he got it and that he sure as hell likes it. Who knows? Maybe you will here from him sometime ya know?
I met WIlliam M. Gaines when I was twelve. Just went to the Mad Magazine headquarters in New York and he happened to be coming back from lunch. I was with my dad and maybe five other people, and we all got his autograph no problem.
Meeting Stan Lee sounds quite... different. But that's cool you got to meet him.

Yes, it IS reversible! I feel much more optimistic today.
I'm sorry, I just made the mistake of listening to the news recently. I live in a backward redneck place, where opinion is often reported as fact and ... Nope, not even going to think about it, or the sad face and angsty emo will return.

Man, that does suck. I really hope he managed to get it.
There should be some way to write him, or at least his agent or something I dunno. Send him a copy of the scan, saying something to the effect that you don't know if he was given the physical copy so here's a digital copy?

I can understand the security. Stan would never get to leave if there wasn't some strict rules going on.
You still managed to get your picture taken with him. In the end, you also got acknowledged by him. Maybe not for your art work but at one of the many devoted fans. Through all that hustle and bustle, I bet hearing someone say 'thank you' to him still one of the best gifts he can receive.

i kinda know what thats like. i got a chance to meet Yoshitaka Amano once and i was fortunate enough to not have such a horrid wait. i even got to exchange a few brief words with him through his translator. i think i was the only person who actually took a calm respectful stance with the guy to cause people were practically jumping him. Fact is i couldn't really express my gratitude for his work because of the language barrier..but i think he understood. he even gave me n extra big "autograph" in an art book of his i have
He came to Dragon Con recently! and while I was staffing, I was suddenly called in to help become his guards when he made an unexpected visit at the comic artist alley. the closest I got was walking side-by-side with him keeping a look out for desperate fanboys. too bad I didn't tackle and choke-hold any of them. Ah well, It was an awesome experience. Sweet that you have a better picture of him.
I know it sucks, but take solace in the fact that even working in the entertainment industry where it is your job to talk to these people, you sometimes get treated exactly the same way. I once had an unnamed celeb snap his fingers and have his security guard flip us off because my camera guy wanted to snap a publicity shot. He was too lazy to flip us off himself, and he spoiled a picture that was being taken to give HIM good press. HURF! Anyway cherish the fact that you at the very least got to meet him, and even if he didn't say anything to you, he gave you a maternal pat on the back.
I think he knew what you were feeling when he gave you the smile and patting. He was probably aware of the way those guys treated you. He was probably tired and being lead away quickly to prevent fan rushes, but I believe he knew. Hopefully also knew of that drawing.
Still man, I hope you had fun in the long run. The way those guys treated you was complete ass. I don't care if it's "professional" or whatever to keep things smooth. Still complete ass.

I don't know what is worst, the fact that they had Nerfed him with security guys so much that it made it next to impossible to approach him or any of the other major celebs at most of these events or the fact that a few crazed FBs out there have forced cons to Nerf their big name guests like that.
So many fans turn out for events like this that they have to rush people through to keep the line moving and in order. Unfortunately, the staff end up acting like pricks just so people don't get all friendly and try to hang around. :P That's one advantage that smaller cons have over the mega cons. However, you're less likely to meet the super star celebs there.
Well, I'm glad you at least got to stand near him and get a pat on the back. He probably can't stand still for too long without getting mauled by fans. I bet he never expected he'd be such a big deal in all his life.
Hey, wait... he didn't speak at all? *gasp* IMPOSTER! HE'S A SHAPE SHIFTER! XD
I've had the fortune to meet Bret Spiner (LCDR Data) and Michael Dorn (Lt Worf) at a very small sci-fi convention, which meant that I got right in and got autographs from both of them. They were in a hurry to leave, since I was the last one there and the con was winding to a close, but they were both nice. Especially Bret, who was a very funny guy. Michael Dorn asked me not to use my flash just as I took a flash picture of him. I was hoping he'd turn the table over and yell at me in Klingon, but he didn't.
The only other "celebrity" I remember meeting was Shinichi Watanabe (Great Director Nabeshin of Excel Saga) who was freakin' awesome! He dresses as Nabeshin at all of the conventions he goes to. He can't speak a lick of English, but he's very expressive. And what little he did speak to us, the translator had trouble telling us because she was laughing so hard.
The only other close encounter I've had with a major celeb was one time in Florida when I saw Tim Allen at the indoor arcade, Disney Quest. He was surrounded by security goons and a couple of friends, so I didn't bother him. Naturally, he made the rounds to all of the racing games.

I got to meet Robert Picardo (The Doctor) here in Vegas at a local comic shop. VERY personable, joking around, shaking hands even before sitting at the table for the signing and such. Apparently he does a lot of stuff with the local Star Trek club and he knew several of the members by name. Someone asked him why he signed for so cheap ($40 for pix & siggy) and was at such a small store, he said he didn't think it was right to be accessible only to those fans who could afford con tickets and $100 for siggy + another $100 for a pic (shatner, we're lookin' at you). He was always my fave aspect of Voyager, but that made him a lot cooler in my book. (personally, I think RP is a better singer than Spiner :P )
I also met Chase Masterson (Leeta {DS9}{she's still hot}) and Beverly Washburn (Lt Galway {The Deadly Years}{she's still old, lol}) at The Star Trek Experience during it's last week of operation. Oh, and saw some dude from Enterprise sitting at a table all alone. It was sad. :( (I don't know who he was--I never really watched Enterprise and if Roddenberry's ashes haven't re-entered the atmosphere yet, I hope they plunge through Berman's/Bragga's skulls >:{ )
I saw Shatner and Nimoy on stage at a con along with Quinto and Kogan (the new Spocks) Shatner was a blowhard, Neimoy was awesome. Of course, Nimoy escaped the Nazis and that alone makes him fuckin' amazing.
I've seen Penn (of Penn & Teller fame {watch 'Bullshit!', it's great) several times at my work, but he's always been w/ family so I've never said anything to him.
Last, but not least, I've met Brian Jacques (author of the Redwall series). Now, there's a man who knows how to treat his fans!

Over the decades, I've met Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, sat next to David Prowse for an entire con, sat next to Mark Hamil for an entire con (both were DragonCon), had a beer with Sergio Aragones on more than one occasion, been in room parties with Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, And actually had Frank Kelly Freas ink one of my drawings for fun at Confurence.
Was once in "Who's Who in American Sci-Fi and Fantasy Art" thanks to C.J. Cheryh nominating me. :)
Yup met a lot of folks and been around.

I know you've got a metric ass-load of replies here... hope you get time to read this eventually.
You spend a HELL of a lot of time on that picture - and it shows! The Webhead's been my total FAV character since as far back as I can remember. You did him justice.
Yes, four seconds.... and it hardly seems like it was worth the waiting and the shuffling and the crap and the cost of replacement sneakers.... but I, for one, am PROUD for you - your tenacity and patience is awe inspiring. No Joke! I mean... you tried! You tried so hard, patiently, to get even that much time with him.... and you gave him a gift.
YOU! Max Blackrabbit... DARED to think that STAN FREEKIN' LEE, comic legend that his is, would be gratefull or impressed with your little bit of art.
(*SMILES*) I ENVY you, Sir! To be able to even get that far is a dream to many... and you were able to get that much to him.
Who knows! Maybe, with any luck, he'll get to see it once he's all unpacked from the trip - and who knows! You might just hear from him....
But bottom line, you did something GREAT; you got to tell someone who helped influence you, with just being himself, "Thank You".
Seriously... How cool is THAT?
GOOD on you!

Its hard to say if Stan actually got the art or not, the man is literally inundated with gift art all the time. Lord knows I saw a vast amount handed to him at SDCC, even by the pros. I do know the bigger the name, the more likely Stan kept the art.
I would LIKE to think Stan saw and kept the art, fingers crossed he has.
I first met Stan at a Diamond Comics trade show back in 87 and even back then he had his goon squad covering him. He was proudly promoting the marriage of Peter Parker as a 4 cover exclusive, but same interior in all 4 covers. To about 3000 plus comic book shop owners.
I quote Stan "Marvel is producing 4 covers to form one big picture, but with the same interior, this means your customers will have to buy all 4 covers to form the picture. And they will naturally buy multiple copies as well, leaving less money for them to buy the independent titles ."
I Swore right there I will never buy another Marvel product again!!! (Though I did buy Ironman on DVD!)
BUT, at a Q&A session with Stan, I asked before that crowd of 3000, "So, Stan, whens Marvel going to do a movie that doesn't Suck?" (bear in mind, this was 1987).
Stan stood there, gulped a bit, then said "Good Question....I'll get back to you when we do!"
The audience laughed.

wow! yeah, still I'd say it was worth it. but damn! I hope they didn't throw out your art!
I'm sure it just got stashed in a giant vault with the rest of his fan art somewhere in the middle of warehouse 13, gathering mystic energy. Soon it will all morph into a giant Stan Lee set on the destruction of the evil aliens threatening to take over Earth. Yeah, that's totally how Hero Man gets his energy.
Dude, you just saved Earth with your fan art!

I wonder how bored Stan Lee must get sitting there all day long, waiting for nerds to come up and take their picture with him. He always seems like the kind of guy who, no matter how boring it must be to be mobbed by fans everywhere, still loves smiling for them and taking pictures. No wonder why he needs glasses, so many flashes all day long.
One thing I found out about people on a level like stan is it's almost impossible for your gift to be recognized unless you are on the same level of fame..... I recently dealt with a convention that we had Anime and TV stars attending and with some we had to have a level of security which was the same way with Stan but with Stan's case they may have seem to be overprotective but there are reasons because of over zelous fans and because of that they lump all of us into that catagory..... On the art you did I suspect it was handed off to one of his assistants which if it peaks that persons intrests then maybe it will be shown to stan..... Next time I would first present it to that person and if they agree maybe you can present it to Stan as long as you follow what they say which generaly means Stan has to recognize you first and allows you to come up to him.....

Ditko resides in New York City as of 2008. He has refused to give interviews or make public appearances since the 1960s, explaining in 1969 that, "When I do a job, it’s not my personality that I’m offering the readers but my artwork. It’s not what I'm like that counts; it’s what I did and how well it was done.... I produce a product, a comic art story. Steve Ditko is the brand name".
JRSR might still do cons though.

I feel more sorry for Stan and his company being bought out by Disney. He's more of a shell of a man now. I hope disney leaves Marvel to themselves and don't cause them to give up and break off again like Pixar. Disney has a habit of screwing people over and limiting them as to set themselves up for failure.
its cool you got to meet him briefly unfortunately it was all to brief.the problem is stan is very old and very famous. millions of nerds would love to hang out with him for awhile even people not much into comics. its a shame they tried to rush so many people through.better to not let some people meet him and have those who do at least get 30 seconds or so. I got to meet chuck jones at a wb store and got to talk with him for about 2 minutes and shake his hand while he posed with a picture for me and signed my animation cell . its always neat to meet people you admire
Woops didnt read your post, I guess Stan has reached a level and for his age needs all the protection I mean who would not say no to meeting Stan...
I guess the only way to meet him nowadays is to get through the marvel contacts and reach him like that ;) Who's his closest pal at Marvel?

This spidey pic is so full of Epic WIN, it's over 9000! It sorta reminds me of the pre-McFarlane Spidey. Good work!! This has been fav'd, good sir!
Sorry to hear about the downside of the whole experience. That had to be hard. Hope you had some fun during the rest of the expo.

Imagine if you were the bodyguard who let someone in with a glass framed picture. Suddenly there's a shout, "This is for killing Gwen Stacy!" followed by the sound of shattering glass, and the death of that sweet old timer.
I'm so sorry you were treated so badly. I'd have been just as upset. Actually, I would have given up hours beforehand.
Stan patted you on the back, smiled and nodded to you. With everything going on, he was still able to do that for specifically you. He understands a little bit of your plight and wanted to leave you with something positive. The picture might have taken you two days, but he's had a long long life of having to deal with Spidey's good and bad times, good and bad fans. Imagine if he said something mean or blew you off!

When I met James Doohan and Walter Koenig at the Novi Expo Center some years back at a comic book convention (where I met other celebrities including Adam West and Tom Savini), Doohan (Scotty) was aloof and out of it, barely aware of my presence as he scooted off in his motor powered scooter. That was sad. Then came Koenig (Chekov) who was a Goddamn pill! He wasn't happy to see us (my cousin and I), was unfriendly, didn't smile, and when it came to taking a picture, he wouldn't look at the camera either. I think he hates where his life is now, stuck doing Star Trek conventions for Trekkies and geeks, while Shatner is still sort of doing something with his life in the media outside ot Star Trek. Still, you would think he would've been at least a little bit nicer to us than he was.
hooooooooooly shit, does this post has a shitload of comments :O I think i had to scroll down way below my desk...
Anyways, congrats for meeting STAN!! Thou i thank this guy especially for giving birth to The Incredible Hulk.
What a nerveshaking story by the way :O I kinda feel what you've been through.. i once had such a chance as well. But with a musician and songwriter i adore since my childhood especially for his electronic music works in the early 80s.
I gave him a handmade copy of my first album that i made and wrote a personal dedication into the sleevenotes. Afterwards i had a wonderful talk with him and one of his bandmates.
