Thursday Prompt: Armistice Day
“Dance above the surface of the world. Let your thoughts lift you into creativity that is not hampered by opinion.” - Red Haircrow
This week’s prompt is given to us by a random word generator: break
=====
On the eleventh day of the eleventh month at...10:59 and 45 seconds:
"FIRE!"
With one final, mighty roar, the artillery battery, barrels elevated to their highest point, fired as one.
No deadly high explosives, ready to kill or maim.
No gas shells, ready to choke and strangle.
No, the projectiles that flew into the air burst with cheerful flashes of light, signaling the cease-fire.
The battalion commander nodded with satisfaction. "Well done. I think we can take a break and rest for a bit."
"But for how long, sir?" his aide-de-camp asked.
"Why," the commander said dryly, "this is the end of the war to end all wars! Haven't you heard?"
There was a pause, then both men broke out laughing.
The aide turned solemn again. "Seriously, sir, how long do you think it'll hold?"
The commander gave a brief chuckle. "If we're lucky, a year. If we're blessed by God, twenty years."
The aide nodded. "Best keep the powder dry, then, sir."
The commander nodded back. "Quite."

The S-4 (South Saskatchewan Scotch Society) just broke up its regular Thursday meeting..., naturally we toasted the veterans. both living and dead..., who include my stepdad, my biological father and my mother's two brothers, all veterans of WW2.
My stepdad was a Navy veteran of three wars..., WW2, Korean and Vietnam..., and I will never forget how proud he was to see me take my oath of military service for the Vietnam War..., even though it was a war that neither of us supported politically..., and I was joining the Air Force. There probably aren't too many Air Force veterans who had their oath administered by a Navy officer!

Very well done Marmelmm, it reminds me of something I once read about the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, one diplomat turned to the other and said he thought he heard the sound of a small child weeping. Because of he course was going to have to fight in the war they may have prevented.
