To be honest, printers themselves are the worst thing to ever happen to printing. Nobody would want to engage in percussive maintenance on their printers if they didn't exist to begin with. š¤£
Actually, the only time I ran into problems getting a printer functional was if the printer required some complex additional software to run. Most printers, for the most part, even network printers, are practically plug and play when it comes to Mac. Now iOS, on the other hand⦠*Facepalms* Yeah, printing on iOS can be a bit of a pain if the printer isn't AirPrint capable.

A printer is only ever as good as the person using it.
Most of the time the issues we get called out for are because the customer is a dumbass tbh.
Scanner full of blue tack, paper loaded incorrectly, trying to use heavy cardstock without telling the machine it's heavy cardstock, using generic windows drivers instead of the proper ones, can't print when network is down, etc etc.
Also Mac is just a shit to use for printing in general, it's slow, it legitimately can't print without having a special postscript kit on the printer (which you have to pay for, a lot), it completely lacks bi-directional setup, the way it manages print queues is just a nightmare as well.
Ugh, I just can't stand Mac.

Yep, User error⦠99% of all our tech support woes.
As far as your mac related woes, I can't say. In the three years I spent as second level support, the closest to any of those sorts of problems I came was when a printer required an actual application to run.
The past three years I spent having to use windows for work and got dozens (likely far more) of problems with the printers at work, mostly with the print queues, that I've never had on my mac.
