One of the best feelings in the world for me is the anticipation you get when you're set for a date. When the day finally comes, you get all prettied up and you look in the mirror and realize someone else out there likes you for who you are. You show up to dinner and you get there a little early so everything is ready when your date arrives. Your heart starts racing and you run through the scenarios of how the date could go. What do I ask them? Did I put on too much perfume? What if they aren't like how they were when I was talking to them earlier?
All of those thoughts start to dissipate when you stare at the clock, noticing it's 5 after.
10 minutes after.
20 minutes after.
The waitress keeps coming back to refill your glass of water, a bit of melancholy on her face as she walks away. It starts to dawn on you.
You wait, still clinging onto hope. You look around, seeing other tables with couples enjoying their dinner.
Then you look back to the empty seat at your table and your heart sinks.
