Clothing helps reduce fur upkeep to certain areas.
Keeping fur short is convenient and less upkeep, longer follicles are more luxurious, if genetically possible. The issue here is not just brushing it in the morning and forgetting about it, it's keeping it all in place, ALWAYS (humans fret about hair, eyebrows, facial hair, pubic hair at times and in one particular case that I know of, arm hair). It depends if you got what it takes to stay on top of it all.
It also depends on the individual; there would be those that couldn't fathom not shampooing from head to claw every day (or more), while others get away with the lightest of upkeep. Living conditions may vary.
Heightened sense of smell is a weird thing; what smells good for some is nasal torture for others, "free-and-clear" shampoos/body lotions/conditioners are the way to go, just to be safe.
I'm sure their grooming industry has the needs of the furry-types in their respective universe, ranging from traditional methods, innovative inventions that have saved considerable amount of time (but with questionable compositions that may or may not cause cancer), all-natural alternatives that are twice as expensive (can't be produced in enough quantity to lower costs) but judged as being not as effective, to shortcut/"miracle" products that are just junk.
