From the same designers of some of the most iconic cars ever, the 1988 Cadillac Allante becomes my newest member of the Kath stable. This car was nearly $60,000 in 1988 making it the most expensive American car you could buy at the time. It was GM's answer to the Jaguar and Mercedes two seat roadsters available at the time and considerably cheaper than the competition. The idea was to have an exotic car body from Italy mated with the dependable American frame and running gear from A Cadillac Eldorado. The result is a quirky two seat roadster that no one wanted to buy. Cadillac had to offer a buyback program to protect buyers from the eye-watering depreciation the cars were experiencing. In some cases, customers were seeing a $30,000 drop in value just driving it off the lot. This example is in amazing shape for being 33 years old and I bought it for cheap, I mean real cheap. Cheap enough that I wouldn't be too heartbroken if I junked it tomorrow. It is in amazaballs condition considering its age.
The car only has 56,000 miles on it and runs far better than it should for how long it sat over the years. Biggest problem are the tires, they are almost brand new tread-wise but are dry rotted and have flat spots. I have an appointment Monday to fix that. The car is fun to drive and I'm sure putting round tires on will make it even better.
The guy I bought it from was in his 70's and had planned to restore it but he wasn't a car guy so he would have to pay someone to fix it and found no one knew anything about them and wouldn't work on it. I asked him what kind of shape was the cloth top in and he looked at me and said he had no idea it was a convertible.
DMV lady: "What is an Allante? Some kind of boat?"

This would be considered a 'Vintage' by Connecticut DMV law (over 25 years), and qualify for a special plate.
You didn't say what it cost you and I won't ask, but you seemed pleased enough with the transaction. Even the interior looks nice (for 1988). Good Sunday driver. Enjoy!
