Luck was definitely on their side in those moments. They managed to come out alive, leaving behind a field of ash and smoldering corpses. Everyone was surprised at their newfound powers.
"Okay, Ryona," said Shukaku, breaking a brief silence. "Why am I now capable of fire attacks; what the hell is goin' on!"
Ryona paused to think and assess their current situation.
"You know, I think it must have happened when our Delta Segments used their power to free us from Zenaïx's chains," he finally said. Everyone soon had their attention completely on Ryona, waiting to hear what he has to say. "When the power of the segments clashed with Zenaïx's energy, the resulting energies from the clash must've resulted in granting us new powers that was stored in the back of our minds, particularly the ones of our Halloween characters!"
"That's very interesting, Ryona," said Diana, amused at his theory. "So then that means…"
"Exactly. Shukaku is capable of using Axel's skills and powers with the Eternal Flames. Kyūbi is capable of Xemnas' powers and skills with his Ethereal Blades, Interdiction. While I'm capable of Roxas's abilities with the Keyblades: Oathkeeper and Oblivion."
"Cool," said Shukaku as he examined his chakrams.
"However," continued Ryona. "It seems we will only have these powers until Zenaïx is defeated."
"That's very logical," said Kyūbi. "And I suppose defeating him will result in the restoration of our original powers?"
"Yes, seeing how the explosion may have resulted in Zenaïx's energy becoming a 'lock' on our original powers."
"That just suddenly brought something up," said Shukaku. "Zenaïx's appearance almost looked like our costumes put together. Do you think he was looking for some human form?"
"Possibly," answered Kyūbi. "His coat did look like ours…"
"The chains possibly represented his binds to the seal," added Ryona. "Yes, perhaps he was using our image to make himself a human form. Matter of fact, he almost looked like Kyūbi. Xemnas's hair style, though longer and more disheveled, and Kyūbi's eyes…"
"Geez, Kube!" said Shukaku. "I didn't think you would be popular with the bad guys, too!"
"Quiet, Shukaku," said Kyūbi. "This isn't the place or time to be joking around with something like that!"
"For cryin' out loud! Can't you learn to take a joke!?" Shukaku then turned to Ryona. "Speaking of Zenaïx, where'd he go?"
"I remember seeing him taking off in that direction," said Diana, pointing at the mountain in the south.
"Then that's our goal; let's go!"
They immediately took off towards the bluff. When they got there, they Phoenix laying on the ground. He was bleeding badly from a deep gash in his side.
"Phoenix!!" Ryona cried as he rushed to his side. He held him in his arms. "Please, Phoenix. Please be all right! Please…don't die!!" Ryona started tearing as he pushed his face into Phoenix's chest. He stopped crying as he heard a faint heartbeat. "He's still alive! Help me!"
The four helped Phoenix into the van. Ryona, unable to use his healing arts due to the power lock, looked frantically around for a first aid kit. He finally found one, and they bandaged Phoenix up.
"Of all the times I can't use my powers, why did it have to be now," growled Ryona. "I should've just left for the bluff to help Phoenix while Shukaku fought Zenaïx." He was leaning on his dog's body, tearing. "God…please…don't take him away from me…"
"Miracles had happened with us before, Ryona," said Diana. "I'm sure Phoenix will be alright."
"I hope so, too," said Ryona after a long pause.
The three got in the van and drove towards the mountain.
Once they reached the mountain, they saw a trail leading into the woods.
"Diana, you better stay here in the van with Phoenix," warned Ryona.
"And get captured by zombies again!?" Diana protested.
"Alright, fine; but stay close."
They had begun to walk the trail up the mountain with Diana holding close to her brother. Ryona locked the van with his Keyblade's power so no one could get to Phoenix.
"Man, what a Halloween this turned out to be," said Shukaku. "If it weren't for Kyūbi suspecting somethin' about the cornfield, I'd be sinkin' my teeth into that candy by now!"
"Don't put the blame on me," snapped Kyūbi. "As I recall, you also decided to investigate the field because of your 'bad vibes'!"
"Guys, enough," snapped Ryona, still full of fury from his late rescue of Phoenix. "Do you want to give us away to the enemy? Then shut up, both of you!"
Both of the demons stopped, trying to ignore each other.
"But why would Zenaïx come here?" asked Shukaku after a long silence. "Why didn't he just go on with attacking people? What could be so important here?"
"I don't know, but we may find out soon enough," said Ryona as they continued to walk the path.
As the trees started to clear, they could see a building in the distance. The building was near the top of the mountain, having what looked like a cross on its roof.
"Hey," said Diana. "Isn't that a church up there? I don't remember there being a church around here, unless it was an old church I never heard of."
Ryona suddenly stopped, having a blanch, horrified look on his face. The others stopped in confusion of the suddenly paralyzed boy. "Ryona…what's wrong?"
"Oh no; this is not good," said Ryona in an ominous voice as he suddenly broke into a run.
"Whoa! Ryona!" Shukaku blurted out, wondering what could be happening.
They all soon broke into a run. Shukaku soon caught up with the panicked boy, with the others following close behind.
"Ryona, what is it?" the sand demon asked.
"Something very bad," he said, still looking ahead. "You know how if an angel loses its wings, it becomes human."
"Yeah; what about it?"
"That's something we can't let him do! Once he becomes human, he'll step into that church and become purified of all his sins. The moment he sets foot through the archway, he'll be cleansed."
"Isn't that necessarily a good thing though?" asked Diana, having caught up to Ryona.
"In this case, no! Because if we kill him after he enters the church's archway, he'll enter Heaven. And with the power he has, he'll not only take over Heaven, this whole world will be destroyed!"
Everyone else had horrified looks on their faces. It almost looked like the boy's words made their hearts stop dead from cardiac arrest. They now knew they had to get to the church before it was too late.
"So how on earth do we stop him?" asked Shukaku after getting himself together.
"It would seem that the only way for Zenaïx to enter Heaven is the only way we can kill him," said Kyūbi. "As long as he still has his wings, he can neither die nor enter the church. If we cut them off, he'll become mortal, and we'll risk the end of this world. Ironically, that's the only chance we have. Once his wings are severed, we must kill him before he reaches the church's archway!"
With all that said, they continued to ascend the mountain. Suddenly, Shukaku became suspicious of his surroundings.
"Guys, we got company!" He cried.
Indeed there was. Once they reached an open area, zombies, Dark Souls, and other powerful creatures surrounded them. These new creatures were more elaborate and appeared more menacing than the feeble shadows beside them.
"Oh great," said Shukaku sarcastically. "Now he's brought up the Anti-Souls, too?"
Anti-Souls, they are practical epitomes of darkness. They are more organized and powerful than their Dark Soul cousins. Unlike Dark Souls, which are born from petty acts against all that's good, Anti-Souls were born from two ways. For the Guardians, the first way was all too familiar, for their Anti-Souls were born when they became Guardians, leaving behind their faults and darkness. That darkness became their negative; a being that opposed all that they have and view. The second way was if one fell into absolute darkness, in which in most cases, the body dies, leaving an evil incarnation of their vices and darkness. It was going to be a ruthless battle as the four were surrounded.
"We don't have time for this," cried Ryona. "If Zenaïx enters that church as human, we're done for!"
"Cool down," said Shukaku. "I'll take care of these punks in one shot…just watch."
The chakrams became enveloped in fire as Shukaku rose into the air; the blazing rings revolved around him at blinding speeds. Pillars of fire shot out at random at the looming enemies. Shukaku let out a loud cry as the whole area was blotted out by the blinding light of the fire.
The light dimmed away to show that all the enemies were gone. Ashes was all that remained of the zombies, and several trees were singed by the fierce fire.
"Whoa," said Diana in a long, awe-filled pause. "Shukaku, you just ke–" She was stopped short when she found the exhausted demon on the ground; his costume burned in a few places. "Shukaku!"
They all rushed to the fallen demon. His face showed he was in pain, but he managed to crack a smile.
"Heh…what would you've expected from an attack like that," he croaked. "Damn…it managed to take a lot out of me though." He looked at his brothers. "Ryona…Kyūbi…it looks like you'll have to go on without me."
"But…" Ryona tried to argue, but Kyūbi placed his hand on the boy's shoulder to calm him down.
"Don't worry 'bout me; this isn't the first time this happened to me. Now…hurry n' take down that angel!"
Shukaku's head lagged and swung to the side.
"Shukaku!"
Diana immediately rushed to the demon's side, fearing that he would be dead. She breathed a sigh of relief.
"It's all right," she said. "He's just fallen asleep. Ryona, you and Kyūbi better get to that church quickly!"
Ryona gathered himself together and took off with the kitsune towards the church.
