Nope, it's just sewn that way. Wire is better for poseable tails than getting a tail to stay in a shape permanently imo.
You can use any gauge as long as it's soft enough to cut, and bends with pressure without being completely flimsy. I just buy the rolls they sell at Lowes for tying things up with.
