Gosh, how do you make such a dark pages(in the literal sense) so pretty and visually understandable?

Personal theory on Ka's past life: She pushed a large block or similar large heavy object off of something on a dare, and it ended up hurting/killing someone she wasn't aware was down below. This has left her with a lingering feeling of guilt in her new life.

I suppose as long as there is a readable composition like having the foreground being brighter than the background it will be understandable even if the values are pretty compressed on the dark side :·)
